A question for those of you in China

Here in the States, we are told that shrimp and fish from China contains a lot of mercury and that the food is raised in fish farms where the water is rarely changed or circulated, resulting in filthy conditions. Is this true? I would think the fish and shrimp would sicken and die if raised in such conditions but I don't know a lot about the raising of fish and shrimp.
Can you tell me if this is true or is our media simply trying to get us to buy from American sources (which are much more expensive)?

I'm not from China but I do know a thing about raising fish. Fish raised in dirty uncirculated water will be scrawny & unhealthy. Your not going to get much meat off such a fish which would greatly cut into your profits. What company would want that? More than likely it's all propaganda. I could believe a filthy prep room in the factory where the fish is processed much easier.

Even if the prep room was dirty the germs would be destroyed as the fish or shrimp was cooked.
The response from the resident of China was very educational, as was yours and I thank you!
To think I used to believe that the American media always told the truth..I was very naive. The past twenty years I've learned not to believe anything I hear from them and only a little of what I read. Asking the people involved is much better than believing lies!

well, i am sorry to hear such statement. i am in China, and i really like having fish in my dishes, and i gonna tell you that fish cannot grow in such conditions as some media have reported. To tell you the truth, more often than not the fish are raised in containers in seawater. and the water sure is fresh instead of not being circulated. Besides, before being shipped abroad, it must be made sure that all the fish is save. so don't worry.

Thank you for that information! I have always thought that the quality of fish from China was just as good as that from other countries and when I heard this I wondered how in the world the fish and shrimp could be so tasty.
Our media has a bad habit of trying to shape our opinions with lies. I'm glad I asked, and thank you for your quick reply!
