Blackberry 8310 and Your Laptop

My husband recently purchased the Blackberry Curve 8310 which boasts that it can function as a modem to give your laptop Internet access. I was up past 2 AM last night trying to get it to work with no success! We tried the Blackberry Modem using the Blackberry Desktop software and the AT&T Communication Manager. Both give a 721 Error Code. Anyone else have this cell phone and been successful with the laptop connection for Internet access?
