Yes, nowadays, people are more and more greedy. People are not bothered from where the money comes from. Everybody wants more and more and nobody cares how many people's feelings they hurt because of their greed for the money. The policy of most people nowadays is get money by hook or by crook.

Different countries have different customs, but by your letter this sounds rediculous even to you. The man is offering to sell his son, because that's what it sounds like. I know that some societies recognize a dowary system, and I'm not really familiar with it, but I also don't agree with it in that form. If anything, it should be given to the couple being married for their start in life. If the purpose is to establish the sons (your future brother in law) value....why not give it directly to him? If it's to pay the grooms family for the loss of him, then I think your family ought to receive $35,000 for the loss of your sister!
