So I was bored this break, and just finished reading this book. I feel like I missed a lot of the meaning, and was hoping someone could help me out. It seems to me to be just a story of someone struggling against the fakeness that runs rampant in our society, and how we as individuals find "safety" in this fakeness. Holden is just looking for something real. Is this accurate? Any other thoughts? I love this book and consider it to be one of the greatest works of literature of the 20th century.

I don't think it's about the meaning. I don't think reading books is about their meaning but it's more about what and how you feel when and after you read them. Reading should be a kind of experience. You're saying it's just a story of someone etc, but it's the greatest story about that.
