When did you last eat a Hot Cross Bun (HCB)? Was it before your last mince pie? When did you eat your last mince pie? The stores here have had HCBs in them since before Christmas yet here we are, just two weeks past Christmas, and there's not a mince pie in sight. Should we limit ourselves to such religiously seasonal food at the times when they are traditionally eaten. Or in an increasingly agnostic and atheistic society should we encourage them to "come out of the closet" and be eaten all year round?

Hot cross buns? Mince pie? What planet are you from?
But seriously, I think I have had hot cross buns once in my life. I've had mincemeat pie but long long ago.

PS I'll eat most anything any time, don't care what season it's supposed to be for...

I actually liked the food when I was there but I do have to say that in the world at large the UK has rather a reputation for boring food.

I have eaten sweet rolls or cinnamon buns, but never a Hot Cross Bun, aren't they like cinnamon rolls of some type?? I have had a mince pie but it was years ago when I was younger, it was too spicy for me.. I say "come on out of the closet" and thank the Good Lord for good food.. Any day, any time..

Strangely enough I had my first hot cross bun on 2nd January two days before my last mince pie. I hadn't really though about it but Mr Croc fancied tea cakes when we were shopping and it wasn't until I got home that I realised they were calling them hot cross buns again.

LOL, there's a new hobby for you P1ke. Bake your own (HCB's or mince pies or turkey rolls or whatever), freeze them, and they're available all year round! And yes, if you have to, build a shed for a freezer! ROFL

I must admit I dont like Hot Cross Buns!!! I dont really like mince pies either but I did have once just before Christmas. In our shop we have started selling a hot cross loaf, very popular with the customers!!!
I dont think they should be seasonal but then if they were enjoyed all year round then when they are traditionally meant to be eaten, they wont feel special.

I've never had either one. I think traditional foods should stay traditional. It helps you enjoy them more.

I've heard of both and seen both but I've never eaten either one.

Sorry don't think I have had a mince pie. A Hot cross bun is that like a Cinnamon bun?I do make them every few months if that is what they are.. I think they just maybe sell more on holiday maybe so they put them out the most on holidays. I don't know look over me..lol I figure we should be able to get the foods we love and enjoy all year around. Merry Easter now that sounds like my husband..When everyone was wishing us a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year He replied Merry Easter and a merry new year..nuts..I know..

Do you know P1ke the Shops are getting stuff in far to early I mean it is suppose to be for the Holidays so I should think that maybe 4 weeks before hand putting the Food on sale should be enough
It depresses me because we just get one lot out of the Way and then we are reminded that there is more to come and time is being rushed on

I have never seen at hot cross bun since I left Scotland but I used to love them. Tomorrow I am hoping to still find some fruit cake left in the grocery store as they are all usually gone after Christmas but I may be lucky.

Hate to dissappoint you p1ke but only saw HBC's in the stores here a few days ago..so I ate my mince pie before I have had the chance to taste a Hot Cross Bun...even then it was my son who ate the mince pies!! I only saw one! But do think these things should be around all year long anyway, why should we limit ourselves to one season of the year?...hugs LoLo

I love mince pie!! I only get it once a year, when my stepmother makes it for my dad. And when my mom made it for dad when they were married. YUMMY!!! I wasn't aware that it was a religious thing, though. Just stating that fact is enough to get mincemeat banned in the United States!!
I've never had hot cross buns, though. I hope someday to go to England--I wouldn't see the Palace and all that, I would mingle with the ordinary people and really learn about the country. That's how I like to travel. What are HCB? I remember the nursery rhyme but have never had them!

I would mingle all over, walk through all sorts of neighborhoods and talk to people. I enjoy that and I believe that's the only way you really get to know any country a little bit. Seeing the sites only and eating at the best restaurants doesn't give you any idea of what a country is like, talking with the people does.

Hi P1kef1sh, I saw Cadbury's creme egs in the shops well before Christmas and these only used to be bought out ready for Easter too. Shopping on Sunday I spotted some hotcross buns, buy one get one free too. I think if you like a product it can be eaten all year round. Who says turkey is just for Christmas, though that is when I tend to it eat. The last hot cross bun I ate was last Easter though. Bit of a traditionalist really me. Huggles. Ellie :D

I have not had a hot cross bun for ages but I know that they are sold all year around in some places. I think it would be nicer if seasonal food only came out at the seasonal time, it is something to look forward to then!!!

Ooooh, hot cross buns! I haven't had one for literally years. Maybe they've been in the shops around your way for ages, but I've not seen them around my parents' place following Christmas and I've not been around at Easter time. I'll have to learn to make them myself. Toasted, with jam. Oooooh!
As for mince pies, I didn't eat a single one this year. Lack of opportunity again rather than anything else. A good friend of mine told me about her mega mince pie baking session, but the closest I got to the goodies was the smell!
However, despite my orping for seasonal goodies, I'd hate to see them on sale year round. I mean, if you want to eat them all year you can always stockpile them and bung them in the freezer, can't you? I just feel that if I had access to them all year round they'd lose their appeal.
Mind you, this year I'm likely to be eating British style Christmas cake well into April I reckon, and I doubt that'll lose it's appeal. I made stacks of the stuff, intending to give it to the neighbours as a 'traditional British Christmas treat'. However, it turned out delicious so we procastinated over giving it away for so long that we were forced to keep it :-)

In the Jurassic days, HCBs and Christmas fare were special, because there was such a small window of opportunity in which to consume it. Nowadays - greed being the key - you can have your festive shortbreads from about September onwards, and the Easter eggs appear on Boxing Day. The whole mystique and specialness has been ruined. I was surprised to hear our normally mild-mannered radio announcer last night going right off his trolley re this issue. He was imploring the supermarket chains to please leave us alone to recover from Christmas - and to insert their HCBs into orifices not really designed for bread storage. It WOULD be nice to go back to the good old days where the festive stuff was delayed until a few weeks prior ... but fat chance of that!

Hi Pike!
I went into work the day after new years to be greeted with the lovely smell of hot cross buns!!! Yes I did have to buy some and enjoyed them too!!!
I think in the near future we will end up being able to get these all year round as it is becoming earlier and earlier each year that they are available to buy!!
I was in a supermarket yesterday to find that Easter Eggs are now on sale!!!!!
hugs
