i have been told its common but havent known anyone other than my dad it happened to.. his aorta started to split which would have caused instant death (that is what killed john ritter) but they caught it in time to replace the whole thing.. it was a true freak of nature thing that he went months with it slowly thinning which started in december but he went to the ER and they said he was fine but several months later they caught it on an mri and rushed him into surgery.. normal people it splits within seconds with no advance notice etc..
anyways my question is that after his heart surgery his whole attitude and personality has changed.. im not talking in the way that people that almost die start living for the day or anything but like totally bizarre.. he has episodes where he even seems intoxication but he doesnt drink nor does any of his meds cause that affect.. the doctors say its because they kept him under too long and he didnt want to wake up out of the coma later and that there could be brain damage or something.. i know a lot of people that have had a minor (well one had major) heart surgery but yet all of them were the same after as before..
are the docs wrong or could it be brain damage etc? they scanned his brain and it shows its fine.. my whole family find its hillarious because he was always uptight before it and now he is just humorous but i cant help but wonder if its wrong to enjoy the new him because it might be something else or something

It probably was something due to being under too long..and it affected his brain. My friends dad fell and hit his head....and he totally changed! They don't even speak to each other now! He went the opposite way...started drinking and running around on her mom etc...totally different personality!

did he suffer a concussion or just a regular bump that had a huge impact?

as I was reading things I was thinking no I haven't heard of personality changes after an operation unless there was brain damage and then you mention it here. Yes for trauma where the brain is concerned it happens a lot, but for the heart I never heard of it myself.

well the doc said that such a traumatic surgery can cause it in people but then they kept him under too long so they think that may have caused brain damage.. if it was brain damage alone that would make sense but they were claiming it was just his body being traumatized from the surgery making him that way and that it was common and i had never seen that happen to anyone else

hi moonlitmagiKchild!
oh well, i have not seen people like that. well, i have not really met someone who has had an organ donation. it is not very common in our country, being in the third world.
but anyway, all i know are people who has had heart bypasses, etc.
but i guess yeah it was part of his medication that changed your father's personality.
i do hope that he gets well and you and your family will still be able to enjoy spending time with him.
good day and God bless you1 :-)

I have never seen this before, but I am sure this is horrilbe if it's ture.I am so doubtful that the surgen may do something harm to the link betweem man's heart and their brain.
any way,you should enjoy the time with you dad now, after all he just changed to be better.

well they think it may have damaged his brain because he was under too long while they did the surgery.. the lack of oxygen or blood or something to his brain when there is a certain amount of time they can do surgery (at least that is what they told us with this surgery) that if he is under X amount of time or less there is no risk but any longer the risk skyrocket..
