Do you go by your real first name or a shortened version of it?

Or, do you go by your middle name or something totally different from it?
Plenty of people go by a shortened version of their first name. Richards will go by Rich, Roberts by Rob, Samanthas by Sam.
Some people will use a name that's totally different. I still call my son Goob - he's 22 - and so does a lot of my family. Sometimes if somene is a junior they are called Junior. Thirds are Trey.
Some people are known by thier last name. My mom's closest friend still calls her by her last name, and my sister will sometimes still call my youngest by his last name.
I use my middle name because people have always had a hard time saying my first name correctly. But I know that some men use their middle name because they were named after their father and he's called by the first name.

My son's name is very short also so it's hard to call him anything different. But, we do all my youngest by a nickname that has nothing to do with his real names.

I go by my full first name at work and for people who do not know me when growing up. But close friends who knew me when I was growing up and my sisters and nephews call me Wheezy. My Nephews call me Auntie Wheezy which I love very much. I especially love it when I was up at my sisters and my 10 year old nephew ran in the house from school and yelled "Hay Auntie Wheezy are you here I missed you."
That meant a lot to me.

That is so cool! My aunt/uncles will still call me reinydawn a lot - that's been a nickname since as long as I can remember. I also get reiny and every now and then my mom still calls me ray. It brings up some great memories. But people now call me by my middle name, or I have a group of friends that call me Saturn.

My son and his girlfriend are going to give their baby two middle names so the when he grows up he can pick the name he wants to go by. I hope it does not back fire on the. Our last name is 10 letters already and then having a first name and two middle names he will run out of room on most forms.

I know some people give 2 middle names to name them after the grandparents and stuff. I personally think a first, middle and last are sometimes too many!

I do not use my middle name at all. Using the middle name is not that popular in my country. I use my full name when I need to sign my name in something official. My friends call me in a shortened version of my name since mine is too long.

That's pretty normal. I know a lot of people that are embarrassed by their middle names. Most people just use their first names.

Hi reinydawn! It really depends on who I'm talking to and on how they would address me. I would introduce myself here in Ireland as Lorna. Most Irish would call me Lorna but my Filipino friends would all me Lorn. In the Philippines they also call me Lorn or Lorna. With my family they know me by my pet name which only my closest friends know and immediate family. My son was named after the middle name of my husband which he never used since he's using his first name. But he also has 3 other pet names that was given to him by friends who associated his name with famous person in the Philippines who share the same name as my son.
I have a neighbor who have 6 sons in the family and each and everyone is called Salvador. The grandfather is Salvador Sr, the father Salvador the 2nd and so on and so forth. So they can't all be named Salvador or any short version of it since they all share the same name. What they did was give each one pet name that would distinguish them from the rest.
Happy posting

That would be very confusing having them all named the same!

Same here but obviously they haven't taken time to find names for their babies that they just gave numbers instead hehehe. I often forgot who's the first. the salvador II and so on and so forth.

My first name is Sudipta and I don’t have a middle name. people have always called me by my first name though my friends are/were always welcome to shorten it however they wanted. So I was Sudi to some, Suds to some, Sud& Dis to some.

I am married and I have to go by both the long at short forms. In my mother's place, they call me by the long form. In my husband's place all my in-laws call me by the short form. But before my marriage my name was never called in it's short form.

Does it bother you that they use the short name at your in-laws? If you've been married a long time I'm sure you're used to it.

I pretty much us my real name. Sometimes my mom calls me little bear. Apparantly when I was a baby I used to grunt and growl like a baby bear.... this is where the nickname came from.
Every once and a while someone will call me chris.

That's kinda how my son got his nickname - Goob. When he was a baby he'd actually say "goo" all the time. I've never heard a baby say that, although they do make gurgling noises. I started "gooing" back at him and it stuck!

That is confusing for us that are not used to it. I worked with some men whose custom it was to go by their last name. They never corrected us and we didn't know at first. When we found out, we starting using the proper name.

we Chinese often called by the full name of first name and last name. we seldom have a middle name. people may call your full name or call you xiao+your last name when you are young, call lao+your last name when you are old...in the family, we call sister or brother always.

I'd rathewr be called by a shortened name or my nickname. Pronouncing my entire real name is quite hard and seems very formal. I like it to be more casual in calling me by my nick name.

It does seem odd to use your formal name with friends and such. I think that might be how we stared with nicknames...

Hey reiny! I go by my first name because I hate my middle
name more than I hate my first name! If it were up to me
I would change it altogether! So, since I hate them both
I really don't have a choice! And as for my last name, I
really hate that! I hated my father and since I never got
married I have been stuck with his damn name all my life!
I am really screwed! Any solutions to this problem?

My first name is Susan but most people call me Sue I don't mind,The only trouble is if you are out and someone shouts sue about dozen of us look round as it was the most popular name in ninteen fifty seven. There were five Susans in my class at school so the teacher used to say susan c or susan b ect and that way she could cope, some people don't like their name shortened,I can understand that. One woman I knew liked her children to be called by their full names and did she get upset if you forgot. We shorten all our names in our family nobody minds and sometimes nick names are used as well.As long it is used properly and does not hurt the feelings of the person ,it is alright. My uncle is Clarence Frederick and we call him Fred poor man.We did giggle as kids when we found out ,we used to shout clarence and run off but as kids you forget you have to go back eventually.

That reminds me of when we were little. I guess my older brother (the first nehpew) could not say Bruce properly and he called our uncle, Uncle Goose. It stuck! We didn't know until we were adults that he hated that! Sometimes we do still call him Uncle Goose, but not often!

I am using my First Name as full so far in my life. When I am worked in Malaysia there people shorten my name. Here in India usually we will call people with full first name. When the international companies came here now the culture being changed 75% in corporate companies like IT,BPO and KPO. I wish to use full name. In some cases people feel difficult to call full name. Why don't we use full name of our first name at least this my thought.

It does seem strange that we are given a name at birth, but don't really use it. We shorten it or make it into a totally different name. My first name is hard to pronounce so I have never used it.
