What is my harddrive doing now ???

I have been sitting here watching my hard drive light blink rapidly and burn brightly. This is supposed to indicate that the hard drive is doing something. But I have not been typing anything or changing pages or even touching the mouse, at least until now. It usually does this about the same time every night and it slows my computer way down. I am accessing a wifi signal to get online and I'm beginning to wonder if the other computers that are also using this wifi signal are accessing my computer somehow. There have been times that the activity slowed my computer so much it was almost frozen. I would close my browser and it would take more than 15 minutes for it to finally close. Even after all my windows and programs were closed my hard drive would be steadily working. Do you think I have any reason to worry or is this just a side effect of sharing an internet connection?

Try looking at your processes. If there is any programs or processes running without your permission, then there is a possibility it's a virus.

I can't figure out how to check if hidden programs are running.

Try to look at those visible first. Anything unusual or anything you didn't start? Usually if there is or even if I just suspect it, I run an anti-virus scan offline and online. I usually know if there is a problem when online ones get blocked.

I would call the company you recive your connection from maybe they do some kind of mantaince work the same time every night or day if so I would just shut the computer down at the time and I dont know if you have CCleaner but it is a good free program that is good at checking for reg.errors if you have any I have alot of free programs that help keep my computer free of gunk lol lol

I hadn't thought about that. It may be that that is when the airport is basking up their computers. It is always about the same time late at night. That makes perfect sense. Thank you.

Oops that was supposed to 'backing' not 'basking'.

My computer does the very same thing to me also. I have dialup. I never turn my computer off when I am not online. I have to restart my computer to get it working right again.

Dialup?? Oh you poor thing. I haven't had to use dial up for so long but I still remember what a hassle it was. You must be a very determined person, my hat's off to you. But, anyway, the reason you have to restart your computer to get it working correctly is because every time you open a webpage it deposits a cookie in your computer. When the cookie jar gets full it takes longer to access the page. When you shut your computer down and restart it all the cookies get dumped and you start out with an empty cookie jar again.

That was really a stupid way to explain that. I hope I didn't offend you with my tone. I could have said the same thing a little more professionally.

The blinking of your hard disk may be due to the fact that even when you do not do anything, the computer actually works. There are several processes that run in the background and the user is unaware of them. It may be due to this reason that your hard disk indicator blinks even when you dont do anything.. Now about your computer being slow, there may be several reasons for that like your compu may be over populated with installed programs. Viral attack can also be not denied.

Yes.. There indeed is a way for getting a list of all the running processes on your computer. If you are using MS Windows, then press the key combination Ctrl+Alt+Delete. It will display a small window. Now from the list of tabs, choose "Processes" tab. It will display the list of all running processes.

I have already ruled out a virus and I do have quite a few programs installed. However if I am not using that particular program will it still impact the speed of my computer? I had come to understand that there were programs running in the background. Just for the sake of my curiosity is there any way to discover which programs are running in the background?

Possibly it is running a self check or a virus scan?

It's possible that it's running a self check I guess but I would have an icon showing if it was doing a virus scan.

Your harddrive is doing some hard work, and you should start worrying, but not panickina. It happens about the same time every night, and you do not have any scheduled program such as an anti virus running? Let us start with the wifi. If someone piggy back on your Internet connection it can slow down your Internet access but NOT your computer. I know because I use wifi at home. At the beginning I did not mind someone hopping online to check his email. Then one night two of his friends joined in and used an accelerator to download videos. This bogged down the bandwidth and slowed my connected. There were others who did the same after that so I had it firewalled. End of one problem. By the sound of it someone took over your computer. There is a very big possibility that your computer has been compromised. Sometimes this can be detected from the change in IP address and/or the time shown on the clock. Steps which may need to be taken, not necessarily in order: 1) Set firewall for your router. 2) Set password for your router. Use WPA. It is stronger than WEP. 3) Scan for viruses and other malware. all the best, rosdimy

Then you will have to ensure the firewall to your PC is strong enough to prevent intrusions. Comodo Internet Security is good.

Actually, it is not my wifi. I am the one piggy backing. There is a small airport very near me and they have two routers set up. The signal is strong enough that I can use it almost anywhere in my house. They know that others are using there system because one time we had a bad storm and lightning struck and knocked their router out. At that time they only had one. It was out for several days and since this is basically a private airport I assumed that there was not someone there all the time and they might not have noticed it. So I called the airport and talked to the receptionist. She said that there had not been any of the plane owners there for several days but that the one who had set the computer up was due in the next day and she would be sure to tell him. Two days later they had two routers set up and they have never been off since. But anyway they have to know that others are using their connection because I told the girl that was how I knew there router had been hit. Of course I don't know how many others in this neighborhood are using it.

I think you got schedule disk defragmentation or something virus scanner? ... If it's running hard, check if it makes any wierd noises if it does then you have to change your hard drive..

No I don't have any scheduled tasks running. It is counterproductive to set up a schedule on a laptop because you would not want your laptop running all night while you sleep. It gets to hot and could damage the hard drive. Anyway, on my desktop it always shows me when a scheduled task is running and this gives no indication of what is going on except that the hard drive is busy.

It could be your anti virus doing a scheduled scan if you have that set up. Mine will do that, but I can still do other things, just slows things down until it is done. I haven't a clue about Wifi - so can't help there. but mine takes about 5 minutes to come up - just to the desk top - when I turn it on. Don't understand that, I have the minimum on there - I am a novice and I dont' download tons of things so it just doesnt' make sense for it to take so long to start up. I have closed things on the start menu that I don't use and that didn't speed it up much. So.. I will follow this discussion and maybe we can both learn something! I hope!

I might be able to help you with some of your problems. What operating system are you using? And can you tell me how much memory you have and what size hard drive you have? There is maintenance that you need to do periodically to keep your speed up on your computer, especially if you are online a lot.

It may be an effect of sharing the computer but I would have it checked out more thoroughly, it may be something else, I honestly don't know that much about computers.. I hope you can get it fixed, that is irritating for it to be so slow..

If your connected to the internet it will do that as well. Its sending and receiving packets or information even when your not doing anything. My computer does it to I only figured it out when I was on my wifi connection and it showed me what was happening while my computer was connected to the internet.

You know I forgot about that. My computer has to ping the network ever so often to keep the connection active. Still, the extent of activity on my hard drive is heavier at some times and that is the time I am worrying about. It is clearly doing more than pinging. It seems to be having a whole conversation, or maybe an argument.

My first thought was of course a virus but I am using a real good virus protection that updates every day. It has always caught everything so far. Besides I ran a scan and it came up clean. That is good advice though.

Your are using really good anti virus so no chances of virus.. i guess u need to reinstall your operating system.. internet connection has got nothing to do with your systems problems so just reinstall your operating system and check whether the problem is fixed or not..
