$600 Power Bill?

United States

This is why it sucks to live in central, NY. Last month our power bill was $500. I just got our new bill today and it's $600. Honestly that's better from this time last year when it was $1,000 for a whole month! Ouch! Most of that is the gas. We have gas heat and gas hot water. In the summer my bill has been less than $200. Now that it's winter and we're running the furnace all day, the gas alone this month is $400. I have no idea how we're going to afford to pay this.. but I'm sure we'll figure something out. I'm still in shock because I only just opened the mail a minute ago. How much is your power bill at the moment?

I don't know as I haven't gotten my bill yet. But the past couple of months it's been around $150, and here I thought this was high! I couldn't imagine having a power bill as high as yours, unless I were to not pay it for a few months. I hope you are able to find a way to pay it. Good luck!

This is a typical winter bill for me. This house is old and doesn't hold the heat well, and it's like 20 below outside. We keep the thermostat on 70 because we have little kids in the house. We hope to move this summer, so hopefully next winter will be better.

I find that while I pay higher heating bills for an old, drafty house, I paid much less to buy the house. Hopefully it balances out. Hopefully.

Wow!!! it is way too high, I work at this coffee shop and their utilities less then your bill... they open almost 24 hours. As I believe, Gas was $100 and edison was $487.00. it is always like that? For my personal use is everything less than $300. I live in Southern California and it might be a lot different to you. However, $1000 is way too expensive for me to afford. but I believe you must have a great job right? I hope and cross my fingers that my bill won't reach to that much.

No, for that $1000 bill we had to get the government to help us pay it, and then we used our tax returns to finish paying it off. I don't work and my husband makes just enough for us to survive, that's it.

It's expensive. The power bill is expensive because of the cold weather. I watched a program about how to try to save the energy at home. They cover a kind of material on the roof and the floor. And therefore the house will keep warm with the heater. The heat power can save 1/3 and you even feel warmer. I love China

Mine was $97 for November and $210 for December. Last winter I did receive one for $ 305 and I called the power company and gripped and fussed that something was wrong here!! Honestly, we have a wood burning heater. So there is no electricity for the heat. The stove is electric but was not used no more than it was the month before when my power bill was $150 . The lady said that everyone had been calling and complaining about their bill and the only thing she could tell me was to pay it or that they would cut my power off!! Two months before during the summer I ran 3 110volt air conditioners 24/7 and the power was on like $85-$100. But when I cut those of it goes up. Thing is though is that that they can do what they want, when they want, and how they want. And there is nothing that you can do about it except pay your power bill or do without your power.

Susanshayavon i had to respond to your comment because if you threaten to call the BBB (Better Business Buerau) usually you can get some better results. As soon as the customer service rep told me that there were a ton of people calling about their bills yet they weren't going to do anything with it i would have requested a supervisor. We have had an issue here and there with our bills for our power and every time we end up getting everything solved thank goodness sometimes it take a couple hours though but its better than having to pay for a bill that you didn't actually create

Thank God that the words 'Winter' and 'Snow' are obsolete here in the Tropics. Here in where I live [the Philippines], it's like 24 degrees celsius, but we still use the ACs, and we have lights on--like right now [I'm in the kitchen and the lights are on; it's a little dark outside]. Our WiFi's on at least four hours a day, and--yeah, we waste out on energy a lot. To answer your question, our power bill's like--more or less fifty dollars--but that's around Php2500 for us. My parents have no complaints about it, though. It's the norm for our house.

Sounds really nice. I could go for more warm weather and less winter. Kids seem to like lots of snow to play in. But I don't like to drive in it. Then we have had ice storms-ouch!

man those bills suck! The power bill for our HOUSE here in louisiana has never gone over $80 for one month... and that is with the air/heater running all year long. Our house is all electric too, so no need to worry about gas!

Wow. We have electric hot water heat and our furnace. I feel bad complaining that our bill has been $130 a month. lol. I couldn't imagine it being 500 a month. I really don't know how you do it. You have more kids then me but you seem to give them so much more than I can give my kids lol. So yea here our bill runs around $100-$130. But our bill is up over $400 total because i can never afford to pay the whole thing.

It may seem that way, but our family doesn't have a whole lot. We're lucky. Right now our rent is low, and if we can't pay it, there's not much can be done about it since the in laws own the house. They aren't going to go kick us out on the streets. We usually do pay the rent, but it's still rather cheap. Other than rent and power, we really don't have many other bills. Just silly things like a Blockbuster membership for $20 a month, plus phone and internet. Not to mention, usually we do seek government help during he winter months to help pay the power bill. It's this house. It's old and drafty. After the government assistance to get it paid, we usually end up paying off the remainder with our income taxes. I hope we don't have to do that this time because we want to use our taxes to move.

And I was mad because our power bill was 102.00 this month!!!! I guess we are lucky. I do not even want to know what I would do if our power bill was as high as yours. Our rent is only 500.00 a month so if I had a power bill more than that I think I would freak!!

I don't think I've ever had a $100 power bill. Where do you live? Best my power bill has been is like $150, and that's during the summer when we're not running the heat all the time.

wow! I couldnt deal with a power bill like that! mine was running $30 one month and $200 the next but now I am on the budget and it is 57 a month. I lived in a townhouse once and we had baseboard heat and it was about $1000 a month. I had to move because we just couldnt afford it.

We're hoping to move this summer too. This is the 3rd winter we've spent in this house. It's too drafty. We have to keep the heat on 70 because we have little kids. The furnace seems to be constantly running.

We have all electric here. No gas bill. The electric bill last month was $285. That is up almost $100 from the month before and more than this time last year.

Still less than $300, I could handle that.

I have a meter for both gas and electric and I pay money onto a card and then put the card in the meter. I have managed to keep it down quite well this winter by making certain changes, the main drain on my gas and electric supplies are my 17 year old, when he is at home it costs me more but he has given me some money to put in the meters so its not too bad.

i have never ran out, I put money in the meters on the same day each week so that I know then there is always money on them.

My main drains are the little ones. I have to keep the house warm for them. I'm not so concerned about the older kids because they can put on sweaters if they feel cold, but the littles ones are just babies and can't really say if they're too cold. So I keep the thermostat on 70.

LOL acutally we have a high bill during the summer and a lower bill in the winter. Right now our bill is about 120 per month but we did have a 700 dollar bill in the summer time which was ridiculous we were so upset but then the very next month (still summer though) the bill was about 300 which didn't make sence because we used the same amount of electricity. We happen to have PG&E cause we live in California and now they will be raising their rates once again. Stupid in my opinion its not like they don't make enough money off of people as it is right now

How is your bill so much higher in the summer? It makes no sense to me. Well I suppose being in Cali, you're running a/c all summer, and not using it in the winter at all. And you're not running the furnace either I suppose since it's not that cold there.

It's our fricken house! I get excited in the summer when I see it's only $200. Now I feel worse knowing others get upset when there's is near $200. Maybe I need to move out of NY state, lol.

We thought ours was high? Ours was only $92 this past month. We did have the Christmas lights going on the tree, but they were LED lights. We used the dryer more often too. So I believe that was the cause for the higher bills. And of course the furnace kicking on too from the colder weather.

Everything we have is on electricity. You would think that our bill would be high, especially during the winter months. However, our electric bill tends to flounder around the 70 range during the warmer months because we don't have the heater turned on, and I try to run the dryer the least amount that I can. During the winter, when we do have the heater, the cost does go up, but not that much...maybe to 130 or 220. I know that January is the highest of all the winter months, they've been in the 400 dollar range, but that's it. Now, were on a budget for our electricity, so even though I pay the same amount, regardless of the time of year, I will sometimes have a credit by January, so sometimes the bill is lower than what the bill is actually. I even go to the HEAP people and get a little bit help with some of the remainder of my vill. I had a 400+ electric bill this last January, HEAP paid 190, there was a credit of 150, and I only have to pay like 130. That was a big help.

I have just an electric bill. There's no gas in my place. We're on a budget of $175 a month, and it gets re-evaluated once a year. If we weren't on a budget, we would have paid $227.72. Have you tried calling your gas and electric people and getting yourself on a budget? You may be paying more when you would have been paying less, but at least you would know the amount each month, and that would be what you'd be paying, especially when your bill usually spikes.

I have a total electric house and I keep the thermostat lower than most. I don't mind covering up with a throw when it's cool in here. We also have gas logs in our fireplace in the den which we use when it's really cold. We've slowed down this month since our gas is getting low and we don't want to run out this winter while the prices are so high. My electric bill was $192 this month. Now, my daughter's house is also total electric, but she also has 4 kids going in and out. Her bill has been around $300-$400 for the past 3 months. I think she said it was $356 this month.

Our gas and electric have actually both gone down. Both are separate bills and they are equalized payments so we pay the same every month. Is that an option with your supplier? I find it much easier to budget when I know it's the same all year. Our power is only $34 a month and gas is $140, so I guess we're pretty lucky up here!

Budget billing is an option, but considering the charges range from $150 on up to $1000, I really don't want to be paying $500 a month. Perhaps in a few months I will look into it though since it is cheaper this year than it was last year.

Our gas bill in Iowa was 300 plus dollars for one month in the winter. Our house is 100 years old this year and poorly insulated. Much of the heat goes out the attic, or out around the window frames. And of course through the uninsulated walls. THat's life I guess. We may be able to invest a couple thousand in new insulation, but only make that back in savings over 10 or 20 year period.
