How to beat the recession?

What according to you are the necessary steps that you need to take to survive in a global recession? Any kind of ideas are welcome?

I would say: SPEND LESS. I know that people would say they can't help it since how would they be able live if they don't buy the necessities. I don't mean spend less on those necessities. What I mean is avoid spending on things that are NOT really needed for everyday living.
