I am trying to potty train my three year old son and I might add it is not going so well. He's afraid of the toilet, the first time he ever used the toilet and seen himself urine he got really scared. Now everytime I say to him go to the potty he says he want to use the pampers. Does anyone have experience or suggestions of how to get him over that fear of toilets and get him to want to use the potty instead of pampers. Thanks.

I made a game out of with my boys. I used to put a piece of tissue in the toilet first and have them stand on a stool in front of it and see if they could hit the paper. They have flushable things made for that now that make it more fun.
For the times they had to sit down, I had a seat that fit on top so that they felt secure.
You might try a potty chair that's low to the ground for him as well.

That sound like a fun good way to train them, teaching them to use the bathroom while accomplishing something. sounds cool I'm going to have to try it. I'm currently shopping around for a potty all the ones I've seen just seem so small like if he did use them it will be just a big mess. Thanks

Don't worry too much. I went through all of that already. My son is now five years old. It wasn't till he was about three or four when he was able to use the toilet. I think that if you just have patience and let him be ready at his time things will work out.
Sometimes if you reward a child it can also help them overcome the problem. Good luck to you sahmof.

I have a few suggestions ...
1. Use a traning potty - he may be intimidated by the large "adult" potty.
2. Put fruit loops or cheerios in the potty and tell him to "sink them". Using fruit loops is great because you can say get the red one or the blue one - it makes it fun and teaches them to aim! LOL Boys need that!
3. Make a sticker chart and get a tresure chest. Each time he goes potty he gets a sticker on his chart then after 10 stickers he gets to pick from the treasue chest. (Go to the dollar store and get items that come in packs like 3 sunglasses for a buck or a box of indivdually wrapped candy and more)
4. Take 2 days and just do it ... every 30 minutes put him on the potty and sit him there for 2 minutes. 30 mins later put him back on for 2 mins. Do this for 2 days and you will be set. (Set a cook timer and when it goes off "race" him to the potty)
GOOD LUCK!!!
