Norton is a pretty good software. So is McAfee. However, you have to pay for both of these and that can get kind of burdensome on the budget as usually you pay per year.
There are a few FREE anti-virus softwares out there. They are free to HOME users for personal use.
Avast- http://avast.com
AVG- http://avg.com
Anti-Spyware programs are also good to have and run regularly. The following are also free to HOME users for personal use.
Spybot- http://www.safer-networking.org
AdAware- http://www.lavasoft.com

If you were to choose Norton, which package you choose will depend on your online usage, your computer capabilities/knowledge and of course, your budget.
The most basic package is the Norton Anti-virus which is exactly that - Anti-Virus. For web and emails.
Internet Security is probably a good all-round package for those online alot and with some computer knowledge. If you know how to clear your Temporary Internet Files and History and have some smarts about how to surf safely, than this would be the one for you.
The 360 is good for the user who doesn't know much about the computer at all. It sounds like a "do-it-all-for-you" package.
Remember, no matter what package you choose the price is for a year's subscription. You will receive updates for that full year until you renew. If you fail to renew you'll stop receiving updates and your security is put at risk.
FYI: we use the Avast at home on all our computers that are running Vista and XP. We have been using it for about 4 years now with no problems.
BTW: I noticed your problem with Windows Defender. What version of Windows are you running? Do you have the CD and Manual? Did it come with your computer?

If you are looking for antivirus software solution, I suggest that you look for NOD32. I'm pretty sure there are trial versions of 30 days available for you to test the system. The cost of it might be slightly dearer but it is pretty effective from what I have experienced.
Most of the anti-virus programs are based on yearly subscriptions because they keep the virus definitions updated from time to time. Other than that, you might also want to look at proper spyware removal programs. If you have windows xp or vista, there's a default windows program called windows defender. Just have a look around and you might find something useful that can assist you in many ways that you never thought of.

tinkerick has given you a few sites to check on, those are free and you should be worried about it.
There are a couple of reasons for your windows validation to fail but since that's the problem, you should find other alternate programs.
Go to a search engine and search NOD32 and it should come up on the first entry. Good luck.

it slows down ur computer without any reason or effect
it is better if u take mcafee, avg or avast instead.avg is a good program and it is free too

Is there a version of AVG i need to download?
Because the free one i saw available was
AVG Antivirus Free Edition Version 8.0.176
Virus Database Version: 270.10.5/1883

I don't like norton. They make system run slow.
When it is istalled in computer, they make me feel that i am running my computer to make norton run. They don't give enough memory or cpu to other programs

Norton is good. No matter which version, it is OK. And Norton should be paid yearly.
