Will you resolve to read more and go online less???

January 8, 2009 4:03pm CST
In 2009 I am resolving to read more books in the belief that particular subjects can be concentrated in more detail than on the internet and focus the mind better. Spending less time on the internet is also better for one's health, with less eye strain and electro-magnetic fields for the body to contend with. Do you agree with this and if not, why not - I would love to know

I did find myself spending more time surfing the net last year. It was just amazing how much information is out there and so much to do and take interests in. In no time, I was having headaches and I can feel my eyes tire from staring too much at the screen. I would be online for hours, just browsing stuff. But then I just recently picked up an old book round the house and rediscovering how much i missed the pleasure of holding a good book and holding it physically, flipping thru the pages.

The internet can be surprisingly addictive, at times, but good on yer - rediscovering the pleasure of reading a good book... do you have any favourite subject? Fiction? Non-fiction? Thank you!

Tis a tricky one, when you have to use the net for your work, particularly if the hours are long. I use the computer at work, but that is usually just Monday to Friday - thank the powers that be!

I think this is a great thing to start the year with. Even I feel the dominance on Internet has been slowly taking me away from my passion of reading real books. E-books aren't the same and especially its quite strenuous. I used to be a voracious reader which has now been replaced by my internet preoccupation. I must resolve to more of book reading as well. Thanks friend for a great discussion.

Yes, it's definitely better to hold a book in one's hand, without all those electro-magnetic fields around! The printed page tends to be so much easier on the eye.

For me ,I can't agree more, honestly, most of the time I will resolve in my mind that read more books rather than just on line everyday which is not only bad for my eyes but also bad for my health . Today ,after a few days on line without reading books ,I find out that my mind is a little bit slow in what the books really talking about ,in the mainwhile I find out that my eyes just focus on the books quite a long time just as I did before .. Based on these I am determined to read more instead of surfing the net;-)

I don't have to resolve to do this coz as of now, I read books more than I am online. I also know that being on the internet for a long period of time is not good for your body. Maybe I could say that I could add more reading hours to my schedule.

Hello dreamhealer! You are right there and I agree with you. When I don't have a computer yet, I spent most of my time reading but then when I already had it, I rarely read books because I am always online. But I guess we can find good information online too it's just that it's not good for our eyes to look at the screen longer.

Yes, it's so difficult to just switch it off. Emails can take a while at times, but by having a few email addresses depending on subject/ people, this can help cut time spent down a bit. Thank you

That is certainly something that I want to try to do. I find that there are days, when I find that I spend to much time online and not enough time reading books. I was able to get a lot of books over the holidays, even though I was already a little behind on my reading. So, reading more and being online less is something that I want to try to do this year. I hope I will successful doing it.

Much of the information I get is online. When I am doing research it is really the only way now to gather information. I still read books for enjoyment but when I need to find resourves and information online is the way to go. It is also quicker and cheaper to find my news and sports and little stuff like that online rather than buying or subscribing to newspapers or magazines.

Couldn't agree with you more, on the research side; so much quicker and cheaper. I suppose it's finding the balance, personally I find it too easy to be glued to the computer monitor, not always reading or looking at stuff that is that educational or even that interesting sometimes!

Sounds a good plan, comparative religion could also be good.
