I can't speak to the specifics of your situation but, remember this, any attorney is out to make money so there's going to be something in it for him. The IRS has tax advocates who can help you with most of your tax problems and they do it for free. They represent you and have connections with the IRS so I'd try working with an advocate before hiring a tax attorney.
