What do you do for a living? Are you employed working for someone else? Do you own your own business? Did you go to college so you could get a better career? Are you working in the field you went to college for? Has your career been what you expected or wanted it to be over the years? Have you changed job fields over the years? Sorry about all the questions. Answer the ones you feel like answering. Or even questions that were not asked about your job or career or specialty.
I have had many different kinds of jobs but most of them centered in the medical field. I have worked mostly in nursing homes, but other medical areas as well. In those places I have been housekeeper, nursing assistant, dietary assistant, activity assistant, activity director, private duty home health aide, worked in group homes, and central supply in a hospital. I have also worked as a cashier at WalMart and in a local supermarket. Currently I am disabled and working part time from home in a call center.
Your turn. Tell us what you do.

I actually studied four years in college to become a programmer, but it turned out I'd end up into a freelance writer. I've always joked in High School that I will become a writer someday; I didn't expect I'd actually end up as one. My first job was a copyeditor for 2 years, then I turned freelance. I've never worked in a company since then. It seems like I'm not made to work in an office slavering for someone else. Lol.

I feel the same way about myself. Only I have never had such luck. Or maybe it is procrastination....or fear...or whatever it might be. I have always wanted to be a writer/photographer. But I have never really worked hard at it. I know I can do it. But something keeps me back. Well, now I am in a position to really put my heart into it. Any advice?
My son has been writing little bits and pieces for years including music. Recently he started a novel and jumped way out in front of me by contacting an agent. Now he is waiting a response on the query he sent and got writer's block as soon as he got his first response from the agent asking him to send the query.

Your son's tense, that's what I could say.
Interesting, I want to be a photographer myself but I'll pursue that as a hobby not as a way to earn money. I've noticed that I've started not to like writing after pursuing it as a living. I don't want to lose that interest with photography. I'm on my way to purchase my first DSLR by this way by the way.
You can do it, if you just want to. Cheers~

Well, over the yrs. I have done a lot of different jobs as well. I even was on Disability for some time due to Medical issues so I had to spend time living off of that as well. I have worked as a Cashier at a couple of Stores, I have worked at Burger King, I have been a Customer Service person at our Airport pushing people in wheel chairs, have been a Cashier, etc. for a Convenience store, and now work as a Dispatcher/Call taker for Yellow Cab.
In the past I have also had my Own Business for a while selling at our Local Swap Meet, and doing Sports Card Shows, etc. as well. I also have done online Business type things and made some online in various other things as well. Overall, I would Love to eventually work in a Call Center type position or something online and eventually not have to work for someone else if I could, but until that happens I will have to continue working for someone else as well.

I currently work from home in a call center and I HATE it! The reasons are many, but mostly it is the company policies in some areas. It is rarely the customers that are the issue although it can be, especially when their desires or needs conflict with the stupid company policies. I am currently on disability and since the recent raise I am seriously considering leaving my job. There are lots of issues with my income on the job keeping me from getting my medicaid and other benefits I would get if I quit the job. I am on disability for good reason and the job is just making things worse for me in the area of stress and how it affects my health. So quitting seems to be the right thing to do although no one else ever understands my choices.

hello capirani,
Wow! you have a lot of jobs before. Anyway, whatever you are doing now at least you still have a job and that is the best.
Anyway, I graduated and pass the board as an Electronic and Communication Engineer. I'm presently working in a multi-semiconductor company for more than twenty years. It's a good company and here I was able to apply what I have learned in college.
I'm a Product Engineer here and I support the production line. Was able to go abroad to have some training for how many times already. During my first five years here, I was hired to support the line repairing some of the machines, also in production line. But when there was opening in the Product Department, I tried to apply there and was able to pass the interview. So from then on up to the present I'm working as Product Engineer. I have a better salary here and have a lot of chances in going abroad. This way, I can travel and save some money.

I have 2 jobs... I work full time as an appliance sales person at Home Depot... Even though my job title is appliance sales, I do little bit of everything in that place... Also, I work as a translator... I went to college for forensic science but I ended up doing what I do... There's long story involved with that... I like what I do, especially translator part of work... I work with translating documents, translating technical manuals, student visas & etc... As far as translator job goes, I wouldn't call it my own business but since I'm hired as "freelancer", I guess it's closer to having my own business... It will take some time before this place will hire me as their full time employee... A lot of security & background checking involved... I like both of my jobs... I like the freedom & travel aspect of working as translator... Eventually, I'd like to work fulltime as translator, though...

When I was a teenager I always thought it would be fun to be a translator for places like out in New York City where tourists come to visit year round including people from other countries. Never thought I would want to do it for the UN though or anything political. I took Spanish in school and I don't think I could translate more than the most simple of words and phrases now. I wouldn't have made a good translator. What languages do you translate?

I went to college, gained some valuable computer skills, worked at the college for almost 8 years and then moved 1,000 miles away to sunny Florida with my husband. I took off for about a year, worked for one company...was laid off so I went to work for another company and was recently laid off from that job. My husband and I are in the process of opening up his business, which centers around motorcycles, parts and accessories. He's been interested in bikes since he was young and now, at 61, he's turning his hobby into something that is needed very much in this area and something that should keep him busy and make us some money.

Your computer skills should be valuable for your husband's business in the record keeping part I am sure. It sure is neat when people can turn a real interest into a business to live on. Good luck.

What do you teach? I think teaching is a great career. You help lead the rest of us. What kinds of writing do you do? Have you been published? Writing has been one of my interests ever since I was in 5th grade.

I work in Boston for a large company recording webcasts and streaming them live over the internet. I have been doing that for ten years, and commute from Londonderry NH to Boston MA five days per week to do that. I also have my own online store selling handmade body care and room scenting products. That is my true passion, and something I wish I could do full time someday. I fill orders from 8pm - 12am. My jobs make it hard to have a social life.
I did go to college for four years and earned a Bachelors degress in liberal Arts - Psychology. I then went to two years of graduate school to get a degree in Counseling, but I withdrew from school because I got pregnant (I ended having an abortion because my boyfriend's family didn't approve). I intended to go back, but it never happened. It's very hard to go back to school after getting hired and having a "real" job. I was a poor college student for so long, that it was nice to have a job in an office and get paid a salary for once in my life. Since it was decent and paid my bills... I never went back to school.
I would love to find a job close to home or online instead of having to commute five hours per day. I have never been able to find any legitimate work at home jobs though that would actually be better than my current income (which is not terrific for working in the city for as long as I have). It would be great to have more time to spend with my family.

I am sure you get a lot of negative comments about how much you drive for your job. I used to have to drive only an hour one way and people would make those kinds of comments to me. But if you love your work, and you enjoy the time in the car, it's not so bad. My driving time was my quiet time. It was no phone, no door knocks, no kids to deal with, etc. It was just me time. I could listen to the radio or tapes and sing along...or just be quiet, think and pray. Sometimes I could even scream out there on the road where no one would hear but me and God. On the other hand, if I was really tired, that drive home could be a bit dangerous if I would have problems staying awake. It was really nice to not have to drive to get to work once that changed. In my mind, the drive time is counted as part of the work time and when I count my salary, I count that time also...it sure makes the pay by the hour change when looked at that way.
