Yes, I'm being serious. I heard on television that a lot of people ignore the expiration date on their food. Do you ignore the expiration date? Do you rely on the smell test? The news said this is a bad idea. I hope you don't eat rancid meat. You could die from eating spoiled food.

Being a former vegetarian, I wont even eat meat if I think it looks off - it the food was expired there's a better chance of me lobbing off a limb than eating it.
Even dairy products freak me out - I could care less about the expiration date, if it smells weird its going to the trash.

Meat no. Other foods yes, depending on what it is. If it is sealed there is usually no problem with it. Expiration dates are just more of an idea of when the stores need to have them off the shelf. It doesn't necessarily say the food is bad. Just like bakery's they use to not have expiration dates on any of there stuff in the old days, but now they do. Most people look for the latest date and will buy that then the other stuff goes to waste. We have so much more waste because of this. Just because bread or whatever is out dated it is not bad until it turns green. That is when you should throw it away.

The problem with a lot of commercially produced food is that somethings have an expiration date, somethings have a "best by" date and still others have a sell by date so you have to pay attention to what the date on the container is really telling you.
Milk, for example, almost always has a best by date on it but my little sister will pour a full gallon down the drain the next day if that's what is left because after the date on the carton "it's no good anymore." Which really upsets me since she's struggling to pay her bills and raising a special needs child by herself, she shouldn't be, literally, pouring her money down the drain like that.
With things like milk, I usually do rely on the "smell test" because of that. For the most part, I freeze meat which kind of invalidates any expiration dates.

I always try to pay attention to the expiration date on things, in fact I recently threw out a few cans of soup that were past expiration date. Though I wonder sometimes why they put expiration dates on things like water and cold cereal that dont' really go bad.
Sometimes you can't even trust the expiration date. I got sick once from eating bad yogurt and it was three days before expiration. YOu have to be careful.
