uPON READING YOUR QUESTION i MYSELF WAS CURIOUSE. uPON DOING A SEARCH i CAME UP WITH THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION... But as I am not very computer minded it means very little to me!
SATA or Sata can refer to:
Serial ATA, a computer bus technology for connecting hard disks and other devices
The Serial ATA (SATA, IPA: /'se?t?/, /'sæt?/ or /'s??t?/) computer bus has the primary function of transferring data (directly or otherwise) between the motherboard and mass storage devices (such as hard disk drives and optical drives) inside a computer.

I hope that helps :)

SATA is another Way of Transfering information but it is faster that an IDE Hard Disk like you Most likely Have in your computer.

that's only possible if the motherboard has a PATA port as well as a SATA port. if your asking about intercompatibility then thats absolutely out of the question. PATA uses parallel data transmission, whereas SATA uses serial transmission. also the cable are extremely different

SATA is Serial Advanced Technology Attachment. It is a type of interface for block transfer devices like that of hard disk. Older HDDs where based on Parallels if you have seen an older HDD data cable, you will see that it is a broad cable with either 40 or 80 wires. With interface, data was transferred in bunches like 32 bit or 64 bit i.e. at once, 32 bit, 64 bit or 128 data can be read and written through this interface.
But in SATA, data is transferred serially i.e. only 1 bit at once and so the data cable is very narrow one.
