I am starting this discussion to let all the crafter's out there share their tips and short cuts out there. I knit, crochet, needle point and pretty much do any knee work out there but quilt and I have a few tips I would like to share with you all and I know there are things you can share with us all. When I do needle point or cross stitching I shade in the area already worked with pencil so I know where I have been. I found by doing it this way I do not make as many mistakes. I also work one area at a time and I do all colors instead of jumping around and working with one color at a time. I also do all of the work including the back stitching at that one area. If you do not want to keep changing colors you can keep several needles and pin them to a piece of paper in an area marked with the color number on it. This is my tip can you crafter's share you tips?

Here is one tip that could be used in knitting and crocheting, and why not in needle point too: If I want a shimmering effect on let´s say knitting, I use two yarns with the same grade of darkness, maybe medium blue and medium lilac, together. You get a new shimmering color, that I think is very beautiful. You could make stripes by using the same blue color and only change the second color which could be green and lilac. If you like vertical stripes, you can knit the stripes one at the time and then sew them together, which is rather easy to do so that it looks like everything is knitted in one piece. I guess you know how to do it. ....

Thanks for that tip I have not thought of that. I am knitting a baby bunting right now using a variegated and solid color. You switch colors every other row for 10 inches so I am keeping the yard attached and working with the one color at a time and pulling it up that way I have less loose ends to pull though. I am not working with the solid color for so many times and decreasing. The pattern is hard to do because you really have to pay attention to your count. It is easy but it is not one you can just do without thinking. It is knit one row, pearl 3, yo pearl 2, pull the yo the two pearls, pearl 2 and then yo and start over. I tend to lose count on my yarn over and have to pull it out. I have to really pay attention on my pearl row. I think I have pulled out more then I have knitted. LOL

Sounds a bit complicated.. I often make my own patterns and try to make them as easy as possible - The vertical stripes were a way to make the idea of Kaffe Fassett a bit easier to make. Also the shimmering knitting is a simplified version of his idea..

One cute tip that I learned the other night was that you can use empty diaper wipe containers to hold your yarn quite well while you are working. This is a perfect idea for me. I use diaper wipes and save the containers. I am also quite picky about putting my yarn on the floor after making it into a yarn ball. But this is the only way for me to work.

I do not know the difference between a stand up or lay down container. I would just say the average one that your purchase in the store. I believe that they contain 60-80 wipes and the containers are reusable hard plastic.

Rozie that is such a great idea. Now is this the diaper whipes that come in the stand up container or the lay down container? I have seen coffee cans, or large jars used with holes cut in the lid to slip the yard through it. I was having problems with the Daisy and Petie getting all wound up in my yarn while they are playing so I put in in one of those stand up craft holders that look like a fold up magazine rack. I have several that have been given to me so I am using one. That way when I go from one room to the next I just pick up the holder and everything is with me. The one bad thing is I cannot take my knitting with me when I go to the doctors or somewhere else without putting it in another bag, which by the way I have loads also which I only bought one and gleaned the rest.

The ones with the lid at the end of the container I mean the round ones or the one with that are flat and the lid is on the top.

I've done the coloring in in cross stitch, most of my needlepoints aren't from charts but painted canvas. I do a certain amount of skipping around, but mostly on smaller projects. I could sure use all the tips I could get, but what I want to learn to quilt and would love to see some tips on doing that!

I really don't have any tips that I use, but I sure do like the tip you use for countd cross stith. That is a good idea to shade in what you have done on the pattern so you don't make mistakes. I should have been doing that, as I have made plenty of mistakes, and have had to start over as I didn't get it exactly in the center, or I put in the wrong color, or I didn't do enough of the color. Now that I have this tip, I will probably put it to practice. I also like the idea, you do one section, no matter the color. I have aloways stuck with just one color, but there again, I have a tendency to make way to many mistakes doing it that way. I will have to do it the way you do, and I am sure it will be much easier that way. One thing, I do, is sort out my colors first and put them on some cardboard with the color number so I keep them straight. I basically, try to put the color numbers in order, that way they are easier to find. Take care, and happy mylotting.

well like you i also like to do knitting and needle point but i do not crochet or quilt but quilting is something that i would like to start doing but i do not have all that many tips for people i think that crafting is a learn as you go and learn from your mistakes kind of thing like a trial and error when i am cross stitching i just pay attention to where i am in the pattern and i do not shade in where i have already been i also just work one area at a time and i try to do one color at a time depending on how spaced out the colors are but that is just because i do not like having to keep tying off
