Assuming you have a choice, do you drive in bad weather?

I heard that we will have more freezing rain beginning later today so I'm about to go to the grocery for a few necessities. Now that I'm unemployed, I have the luxury of not dealing with the icy streets that the city can't afford to salt and maintain. It's a relief to me! So I'm going to restock my cupboards and be sure that I don't have to go anywhere during the bad weather.
Winter is lovely but I'm glad I don't have to drive on the icy streets. How about you? Do you stay home as much as possible when the weather is bad and make the streets dangerous?

I live in the beautiful Mountains of Tahoe, we can get feet of snow in just a matter of hours.
Last winter we got an enormous storm which buried us until my daughter's swing set was not visible. We HAD to go to the grocery store at the time, we unburied our 4 wheel drive truck from the driveway and then plowed our way through the streets to the main street to drive into town (4 miles away) to the grocery store!
It is a must to accept driving in our conditions, because I live in the county, sometimes it takes a while to get our streets plowed. The main streets are always plowed first, but secondary streets aren't a priority. We live in a snowbelt so to speak and when the snow comes over the mountain, it dumps on us out here, so if in town they get 3 feet of snow (just 4 miles away) we can easily get twice as much. My husband has a truck which can plow through the thickest snow, I have a Subaru AWD legacy, it's great if I drive in a foot of snow or less, but because it's clearance is only 6 inches, it can get high center and stuck no matter how nice of tires I have (I just got a set of Toyos).
So yeah, we pretty much drive no matter the conditions.

Last winter I was working at Kirkwood Mountain Resort in the IT dept, I had to drive 30 miles to work each way, I always had an ice chest with granola bars, oranges and water- just incase! On the way to work last winter, my 'trusty' Subaru broke down as I started up the hill outside of Christmas Valley (my alternator) I stood outside on the side of the road for 2 hours, the Kirkwood bus drove by, tons of people I worked with drove right by me, I had no cell service at all, finally, someone stopped and gave me a ride to my house, then I was locked out because I accidentally dropped my keys outside my drivers door and didn't notice! Had no one stopped, I surely would have needed the food and water, because it was my alternator, I would have had no heat though!
It all worked out, then 2 weeks later I got laid off and haven't worked since. Tahoe is GORGEOUS, I love it here, but there are just no Computer Tech jobs here, none at all, so needless to say I am on unemployment, Thank you California! :)

Wow, that must've been frustrating, especially when people you knew passed you by! I'm glad you stay prepared.
I guess at this point we just relax and do the best we can with no jobs, keep looking but don't stress. My writing brings in some money to help out and I actually enjoy staying home and not having to be somewhere everyday.

What a lovely place you live in! I hope you are very careful and keep emergency supplies like water and blankets in your vehicles. The water you'd have to bring just before you leave or it will freeze in the truck!

Ah, not quite as old as my profile, about half that from memory. Also I drive a Landrover defender best 4 by 4 by far, so little worry about getting stuck.

I peeked at your profile, thinking I would see a youngster and you surprised me! I guess I'm just a wimp. I'm a very good driver but you can't trust ice, you never know whether you'll go where you want or be taken in a different direction. You made me laugh, thank you!

If I have a choice, I would rather avoid it and stay home. Though there was one time I was willing to go out in bad weather. Even with the roads being closed due to flooding it didn't stop me from wanting to get out. I just turned around and found a road that wasn't closed (though there aren't too many to take around where I live). The one I decided to go one gets flooded rather easily, but it wasn't closed, so I, along with a lot of other drivers went this route. Though all of us had to go at a snails pace or risk getting stalled because of all the water that was on this road.
Another time I went out it wasn't too bad out yet. But as soon as I got out of the store it was hailing. I called my husband to get advice on whether or not I should wait it out or just get the heck home. We both agreed that I should wait it out, even with groceries in the back. But there was one problem...it wasn't letting up! It even got worse! As I had no idea when it would stop, I decided to head home. Boy that was fun! The roads were covered with a layer of hail with more coming down and I had no idea if I was in the correct lane or hogging the road. But I somehow made it home safe and sound. Whew!

Actually with the flooded roads I was only willing to do it after I promised my kids that I would take them up somewhere. Had I known it was as bad as it was I would have never made such a promise to them. Like I said before I'd rather avoid it and stay home. Guess that makes me an old fuddy-duddy!

I was like that once, too, but I guess as we get older we get more cautious. It's pretty scary to me to drive on icy roads and I'm staying home today and possibly tomorrow is the roads aren't taken care of. I remember driving in some pretty dicey conditions, once sliding across four lanes on the freeway-I thought that was cool, I was only 18 and it was a thrill. These days, I'm an old fuddy-duddy.

You probably keep enough food in the house for events like that, right? Last winter I was stuck in my house for days because of the snow, and I live in the city! This week I haven't gone anywhere because of the ice--today it was drivable so I went and got what I needed from the store because 4-6 inches of snow is on the way!

As bad weather increases the risk of accident, I think it's sensible to avoid driving in it as much as possible.
Although I'll drive in snow or whatever when I have to, I've normally got the kids in the car with me so driving unnecessarily on the dangerous little windy mountain roads we have around here would just be irresponsible.

You are right, you should never endanger your children--they are one thing you can never replace! Hey, it's good to see you back here, I feel like an old friend has come to tea!

Me too. I love rain and snow...and I don't really mind driving in rain, but I HATE driving in the snow! Especially when it's the horrible, heavy, wet snow. I would much rather watch it from inside where it's nice and toasty.

I don't go anywhere unless it is an emergency. My son is in a wheelchair and it is a pain, let alone the nasty roads. Our town is not using much salt to do the roads either. It is a mess. We have 6 inches of snow so far and expecting more.

My town is using the salt very sparingly, too. The price has skyrocketed and we can't afford much of it! I'm glad you're staying in and not endangering your son--I've seen a fair amount of traffic past my house today even though the streets are a solid sheet of ice and most of those cars have children in them. I would think they are stupid to endanger themselves but insane to endanger their children.

I don't have a problem driving in bad weather. I learned to drive in it & my first job demanded I do so often. Fortunately I have vehicles that handle it well. I avoid making trips for OTHER reasons ( mostly to save on gas & time since we're a ways from town ).

Having the proper vehicle is VERY important in bad weather. I don't, I have a Toyota Corolla and don't even have snow tires, so I'm staying out of the streets! You used good judgment in choosing your vehicle!

You are lucky! This morning I had to go to work before the roads were plowed...it was nasty. Last weekend we had an ice storm and had to drive to a wedding reception about a 120 miles from here. My son drove his 4 wheel drive and I was very glad! It took us 3 1/2 hours to get there!!! This weekend though we were supposed to get more snow so I ran all my errands after work so if need be I don't even have to leave the house! So yes...I stay home as much as possible when the roads are bad.

I hate driving in bad weather. I am a good driver in the snow but the ice scares me. Either way, I try to stay off the road in bad weather. I don't care to be in an accident regardless of who causes it. I usually have to work and drive out of town in the stuff as it seems to storm on the days that I work more than the ones that I don't. I try to keep enough in my home so that if given the choice, I do not have to venture out on bad roads.

I didn't use to mind bad driving conditions but nowadays I try to avoid them. Since I lost my job, there's nothing I absolutely have to leave the house for so if the weather is bad-like today-I just stay home. I'm a good driver, too, and I think it's a good thing to be scared of icy roads.

I always avoid driving in the bad weather. It is really risky to drive in such a weather. Driving in the bad weather can lead to a lot of risks. Why to take the risk of life when you can avoid it.

I don't think people realize how dangerous weather like this can be, they don't think it will happen to them. They can't conceive of being in danger from the weather, and it's like that all over the country--people just don't see the danger.

I am a new one, I just got my driving licence about one year ago, *_*
Now if I driving myself I am a little afraid, really. Driving in the bad weather, I never thought about. I think I still need more practice in driving. (laughing)

Yes, your life is certainly worth more than a sack of groceries or a new item of clothing. People should stay off the roads when they are icy and dangerous. You're wise to avoid driving in bad weather whenever you can.

too bad more people don't think that way, it would make things a little easier for emergency personnel. as for me, if, like this weekend, we are under a winter storm warning or ice, then i get whatever i need before it hits. i moved from texas to the northeast over 3 1/2 years ago, i do not drive when it is icy or in snow!lol i know my limitations, and i'm not going to put myself as well as others in danger.

I wish everyone felt as you do. Not only do they put themselves in danger, they endanger everyone else!
We'll have ice after midnight tonight and after about ten hours of that we'll get a few inches of snow. It will be a nightmare for drivers and I want no part of it. I got everything I need this afternoon, no way am I going out there!

Not having to decide whether or not to drive in freezing rain - just another reason why I like living in California! But if I did live where there was freezing rain, I have no doubt I would absolutely avoid driving in it if I didn't have to.

California is a beautiful place but I go nuts without 4 distinct seasons. I spent nearly 30 years in Arizona and hated the endless sunshine. I'm so happy to be back home! But people are silly here when it comes to the weather, even if they don't need to be out they'll drive when the roads are icy.
Enjoy your lovely state, I always liked visiting there.

It can be dangerous where I live. Just have to keep checking the weather report and keep an eye on outside. I've gotten caught in blizzards while driving, and once we had a freakish(for us) rain storm that flooded out a street I was driving on a few years ago. My car was literally hydroplaning on the water. It was scary, to say the least.

My mom lives in Florida and comes here during Hurricane Season. This past summer, it followed her up here! My sister and I were visiting my dad and stepmom when the winds from Ike started and had to dodge a power line that broke loose on the way home--that was a freaky drive home!! I can't imagine anyone wanting to drive in conditions like that. Funny thing is, I saw a wind warning that morning and wondered what the big deal was!

That must be very difficult! I'll bet you have food and water stored in case you're snowed in.
