My husband cannot help with the shopping, so I have to do it alone, that is walk to the grocers. I do live less than a mile around from Superstore and farther on is the Safeway and Sobeys, plus there is also Walmart and Shoppers DrugMart. We usually do our shopping at Superstore, so I was wondering whether you just buy everything at one store or whether you check the fliers and if the eggs are cheaper at Superstore, you go there, if the hamburger is cheaper at Safeway you do there? In other words do you pick up the groceries according to where it is cheapest or do you just shop at one place even if some of the items are more expensive then somewhere else?

I usually go to Walmart one week and Kroger the next. Each store has items I like that the other doesn't carry. I think that the gas you waste going from one store to the next pretty much negates the pennies you can save so I don't really do that much.
That's a shame you have to walk so far, in the cold, to go to the store.

I wish the stores were closer. And now my husband thinks I just go and spend it on junk. He is more concerned with money then with what we do need.

He likes it when someone comes over for a visit. Since his stroke, he has been getting depressed. And now he wants me to take a list and go along the aisles and pick up things according to the list but I go by the when we run out, we had better pick that up. So if I go by the list, I will not be able to get what we need that day.

I think, from what you say about your husband, that he is sinking into some sort of depression or dementia and would probably be helped a lot if he could get out among other people more. I know this would be difficult for you, so why not invite people over to your house for card games or just to chat? He needs to have more variety and some intellectual stimulation, a change of scene and of people. See if you can do something like this, I'm sure you will notice he is happier if you can get him to cooperate in this.

We have 3 stores within about a mile of our home. We have been known to buy most of our groceries at any one of them. But if they have sales we will hit up more than one.

whenever my favorite superstore goes on sale, i have the tendency to buy even those which are not in my list. kind of gives me the feeling that i can save so much on those items when i will be using them on the following week or so.
in our place, when the store goes on sale, it covers only some items. not everything gets discounted. so, if there are items which we regularly use that goes on sale, i will include buying those items needed for the next week or two. this makes me save more money on groceries.

Our main store is half a mile away and the other one is a mile away. So we go to the first store most of the time unless there is something that is not there at the first store. The trouble is that sometimes they no longer sell that product so we have to look elsewhere. It is easier to go to one store but sometimes you miss out on bargains elsewhere.

Every week around wednesday we receive the grocery circulars bundled up in an bundle from the mailman. We are fortunate to have a number of gorcery stores within a mile and a half from where we live. Since Walmart is close and matches the sale preices of other stores, it is useful to take the grocery circulars from different stores over to Walmart and have Walmart match the sale prices of other stores and buy everything from one place. Have a great day! Are you getting a lot of snow?

We usually go to Superstore for our groceries, but if there is a better sale on one item at Shoppers or Walmart I will go there, but it is not as often. I really have to make a sheet that compares prices so I can get the best price. My friend did pick me up in her van yesterday so I was able to do shopping for a week instead of doing it every two days. It is not snowing as much, we are having a few sprinkles but not much. It has not melted though.

at most times, i shop at one superstore only. it saves time and effort.
there are times though when i feel like just spending my time lazily around. when this happens, i really take as much time as i want. i go from one store to the next, taking a peep at the prices of items i have in the list. you know, trying to find out which one sells the cheapest.
whenever i do this, it really takes hours. so, that is the main reason why i just go to the superstore which appears to be offering the best prices in town.
however, this strolling ffrom one store to another, gives me though a good time to do some walking exercises which i rarely do when i am staying home with the kids.
so, no matter how we do it, it is surely for our best advantage, suspenseful.

We have our Superstore and Walmart close together, but it seems that Superstore has the best bargains, but sometimes the most expensive store in our area, Sobeys has really good deals, but that means I have to walk a bit more. We usually stick to one store, but sometimes we miss out on the bargains farther down the road. And it seems that Superstore has a greater variety then the other stores.

We do not have a Walmart Superstore here in Winnipeg. I hope we did get one because it would be so much easier. And it would be a lot less crowded, because where we live, every day we go to Superstore, it is so crowded and the cashier lines are so long.

We have three stores right in a row. Market House (a local grocery), Kroger (chain) and Save a lot. We also have a Walmart farther out but they do not send fliers so I don't risk going there only to find things cheaper closer to my house. I am a coupon/flier shopper. I check all fliers for deals first. I go to Market House for those and then Kroger for most of the rest of my shopping. If I am in need of a few things that I know I can get cheaper at Save a lot, I will go there. Kroger has double coupons up to 50cents. Market House will double to $1.00 on Sundays so I go there periodically if it makes sense. I realize that we are very blessed to have all these great stores so close together.

We have a bulk section in our major food stores, but that is not the same. There is not much choice and much of it is just loose candies.

I go to Superstore and then I pick things up at the Bulk Store on the way back. Superstore is next to our Walmart, that the latter does not have a fresh food section, But farther down the road we have Safeway and Sobeys so unless they have some real good deals I stick with Superstore.

Wow,...I would defintely go to just one store if I had to walk--even if it were close. I usually just shop at one store (I just pick one: kroger, walmart, et. al) ..if a store has a real good deal on something we'll make a stop there...however we just like going to one place and be done. It's annoying having to go to 3 stores just to go grocery shopping!
Cheers!

It depends, on the time, and is it really a savings, I mean if I spend 3 dollars worth of gas to save 2 dollars off my shopping bill then it is not saving anything at all.
So one is the store within local area? Is the store in a location where I will be near or going to be near for some other reason if it is not local? How much of a savings is it really going to be?
For use I have him pick up the milk at the store on the way home from work nearer to his job, because while the prices are the about the same or sometimes even up to 20 cents more at the store where he picks the milk up, getting it at the local grocery store were I do main shopping is to costly because it often goes sour to fast, faster than it should.
So it varies. What I try to do is have enough of the items that are non perishables, so that I only buy them on sale.
Example, at one point we must have had about 50 boxes of tissues because we got them on sale on a couple of different occassions. When the meat is on sale, well it is nice to have that extra freezer.
But some things need to be fresh so and then it goes down to how close am I going to be. In my case it is easy in some ways some items I will get at another store, because the store next to the grocery store is a dollar store, and one block from the grocery store is a CVS, and I have to go there for for allergy meds regularly so when I got there I am not going out of my way.

I tend to think that if I'm spending money on gas, then one store is best, unless I have to go to the other store for something that isn't available at the one store.
I do about 90% of my grocery shopping at Walmart, because generally the prices are lower, there are things I get at Sam's because the bulk rate is worth the "storage" price and I have space for stuff.
We get the 40 lb bag of dog food at Sams because its worth it SINCE we go there anyway for their store brand litter and we get tp and paper towels there.
Now, the roomie really likes a store brand diet soda offered at a Texas grocery chain called HEB and we will go there for that sometimes. If we do go there, they do have a few things we might also pick up because they aren't available at Walmart, for example, plain chicken bullion cubes - I can't eat it, but the roomie sometimes likes them.
But, while HEB is cheaper than the other grocery store in town (and Safeway has been gone for years and Albertson's has also been gone since 2005) it still isn't as cheap as Walmart on most of the items.

hello suspenseful,
If you want really to save more, why not buy in the grocery wherein you can save a lot more money like for instance at SAM. In my own opinion you can save more here than buying in a retail store. Because here, you'll buy in bulk. This way you don't need to go to the grocery often and for that you can save some money in your gas. Not only that, also your time, energy and effort.
Sure you can save some at Wallmart using the coupon and to their products on sale but you'll save more if you will buy in bulk.

We do not buy in bulk as there are just the two of us. But when bread and other items are on sale, we will buy more then usual. We have Costco here but it costs about $50 for an annual membership and we do not think that we will save that much. if we joined.

I used to shop several stores, depending on their sales. But since we moved to this town, we only have 2 main choices - Walmart and Kroger. I buy our meats at Kroger and most of the rest at Walmart. Kroger has better meat and cheaper too, but Walmart is cheaper on most everything else. Plus if I drive to the one 5 miles away the sales tax is MUCH cheaper because it is in KY and they do not charge sales tax on food items and non food items are about half the tax as TN. Sometimes go to Aldi but only if they have a really good sale.

The closest grocery store is Superstore where you can get anything, it is a big box store. We do have Walmart next to it, but it does not sell fresh produce. And Safeway and Sobeys the other grocery stores are farther down the road. So we just go to Superstore and unfortunately so does everyone else, and it gets crowded.

We tend to shop at the same place and often don't go anywhere else.We find it easier as the superstores are quite a distance apart so it works out to much in petrol if we travel around.one of my friends goes to one shop for one thing then on to the next shop she saves a couple of pounds in shopping and spends the same in petrol. Normally you can spend just the same wherever you go,everywhere has its bargains and special offers. So we just use sainsburys and that seems to work out best for us,the fruit and veg last the week without going off. Some of the other supermarkets are cheaper but we found the fruit and veg go off a bit quicker.Living miles away from a supermarket we have to buy stuff that we will have to last.If I lived nearer the town and could walk I might shop around a bit more, especially to get me out of the house, but I cannot carry to many bags at once.Shopping around also depends on how much time you can devote to shopping.

We have a large supermarket about 3/4 of a mile away and another store one mile away so we go to the first one. We find the food there quite fresh, but it is rather crowded, but it has a better selection. Now that I have to do the shopping on my own, I either have to walk there or find someone who will drive me since I do not have a driver's license. That either means shopping every two days or once a week.

I hop around just a few stores that are close enough to each other. I try to get the best bargains cause if I don't that can mean being low on food that month. I am now starting a diet on Monday and the food is costly but I will be eating less so that will help out. My parents have to take me to the stores and my dad would want me to only shop at one store and do it all but I am a thrifty person and what is driving less then a block to the other store to get better prices. So he does take me to 2-3 stores sometimes. Yesterday I went to 3 and got some good deals.

I always shop at the one store which i most convenient. I have carefully watched the prices between a Publix and a Kroger and each store seems to be, when all totalled, about the same. One store has perhaps one product cheaper which I need to buy but then the other store has something else I need which is cheaper. So as they both balance out to be about the same I stick with Kroger because their customer card gives many more good deals and 10 cents a gallon discount on gas than any other grocery store in my area.

I check and compare prices, and not only in supermarkets, but everywhere.I go to the small stores also, and do not normally rely on the supermarket prices. I do my shopping by roaming over places, and not essentially in one day. I try to save as much as possible, and seldom buy a thing knowing that I can get it at a cheaper price at some place else.
