new law banning 2nd hand childrens items

I guess there is a new law that has been passed banning the selling of used childrens toys/clothes, etc. From what I understand the comsumer safety commission is trying to get an exemption so that all the 2nd hand stores, yard sales etc do not become extinct because of the new law. I really don't know all the details, but I think the law has to do with lead in toys etc. I know a lot of families rely on used clothing for their children (I have myself when my children were small). I think it is ridiculous that the gov't has yet another way to try to control peoples lives. Any discussion on this?

I had not heard anything about that. My mom has a booth at the flea market in Kentucky, and that is her main source. A lot of families come there to save money, because they can't afford to buy brand new clothes. This would not only hurt sales for my mom. But it would also hurt the people who rely on second hand shops, flea markets, and garage sales to cloth their children. I think the government has gone way too far this time. Thanks for sharing this information with us. I will have to do some research for my mom's sake. Have a good evening!

this is a very dumb law sponcered by retail stores. it is cutting into there profits. my family has bought used clothing and we have also sold used clothing. most of the clothes are like new be cause a child grows to fast to wear them out. we have given clothins to charities for children a lot of churches give away clothing to families with children. every one can not afford to go\ to kids r us for clothes but they can get the same produces at a yard sale or a thrift store such as goodwill and salvation army. with this law the red cross can not help families with children with clothing. i could say a lot more about this stupid idea , but its too much to talk about. dumb is dumb. greed is greed for the retailers.

I just heard about this and was trying to figure it out. I always sell my daughters clothes when she outgrows them. They are usually like new, so I hate to just throw them away. I guess I can see because of the lead poisioning, but how can they ban sellig toys and clothes at yard sales? I don't get how it will be inforced other than closing down second hand stores.

I think the law is too broad and needs to be refined to only include toys that have lead in them. The way it is now, it covers all second-hand childrens items. I really don't know how they will enforce such a ridiculous law either, but I think we should all contact our congressmen to let them know our dissatisfaction. Best wishes!
