I am stumped when it comes to choosing photoshops. I am planning on getting Adobe but what is the top one out of all of them? I know they have some pretty hefty price tags but does anyone know the differences between them all? What does the most expensive one have that the others don't?

I currently use Adobe Photoshop CS3. However, CS4 is out now so you may want to go with that one since it's the newest and has the most features. If you need to edit large batches of photos at once, you may want to go with Adobe Lightroom which is an editing program made specifically for photographers.

Yay, thanks so much. I've been waiting all day for this info and glad you came along. Lightroom doesn't look that expensive either.

I wish I could help, but I don't know much about the better programs for professionals. Microsoft Digital Image Suite is what I bought with my computer a number of years ago and it suits my needs for the simple things I do.

http://www.download.com/Paint-NET/3000-2192_4-10338146.html? You might want to start out with a simpler free program like paint.net. You can save yourself some money. I use it and I like it. Also if you want to get more sophisticated you can try GimpShop. It is the free Gimp open source software that has been set up to follow the layout of PhotoShop. PhotoShop seems to be the choice of professionals that everything is measure against. It is way to expensive for me for now so I am finding the others do what I want for now. http://www.download.com/GIMPshop/3000-2192_4-10650582.html? although some people prefer to stick with the original GIMP. I did download this program but have never found the time to actually learn how to use it. Maybe I should make a New Year's resolution.
