Compared to where you were five years ago, are you better now or then?

I often see on surveys where they ask if I am better off economically now or several years ago. My question can be taken like that, but I also mean are you better off emotionally, physically, spiritually... If things have changed, did they change because you took action, or because things kind of unfolded like they did without anyone's help?

Yes, five years ago, I was working as a substitute and today I have a firm job as a assitance nurse, I was studying, but now I only work. I was living in a appartment in town, I now have an appartment ten minutes outside the town. I have more or less have what I want. I have been working on a goal that I have reached. I would not like to change this life with the life I had five years ago. My kids have grown up, My daoughter left home, and my son is getting old enough to make his own decision, even living at home. I would say my life is really god and I have nothing to complain about. It feels so god. Well, that is for now, happy posting.

Yes, I am better off now then I was 5 years ago. I was in a bad, unhappy, unloving marriage. I was financially better but I have learned that money is not everything in life. I was depressed all the time with no friends and was super under weight. I hated everyone including myself. Now, I am happier then ever. I am a normal weight. I love life and myself. I have a wonderful fiance that loves me and 2 beautiful daughters. I have more friends then I've ever had before too. We are completely broke but extremely happy. I'm better off now because I finally admitted that I did not love my husband anymore and told him about it.

I have found out over the last five years that I can be very happy with very little. I'm so glad that you are happier now.

I think I'm a lot wiser than several years ago. Many people would say I'm better off, as have a job and others don't have one. Personally, I think its harder now, as I will be closing my business this year because of the economy.

I think I am better off now than I was then. 5 yrs ago I was a single mom with a crappy job in retail that had no future and didn't pay enough for anything really. Then I got my real estate license, and that helped me make it on my own to get an apartment. Now I am happily married to a wonderful guy, we've got beautiful kids, and I can work from home on my websites and help hubby with his business. We're not rich at all, but life is otherwise great and I wouldn't ever want to go back to then compared to now! I would think the progress from then to now is mostly my own efforts and a little bit of God helping too :)

I would say I am way better off than I was 5 years ago. I was 21 then and now I am 26. I have matured a lot!! I have had kids since then and I have things to show for how hard I have worked! I think we all choose what happens to us. If we just sit on our butts and expect things to be handed to us we will get no where and accomplish nothing. For all of us that take a step forward something good always comes out of it, every now and then you may fall back, but you just need to keep stepping in the right direction. I hope we all have done that and we can look back 5 years and say yes, it is better now. Even with this recession things may be hard, but look at the little things in life that you have accomplished.

That is why I think I'm better off mostly. Not because of my circumstances, but how I now look at them.

Hi Amber! I wish I could say that things are better for me and my fammily but we have had some unexpected finances to come up that has put us behind. I am not proud of it but a lot of it is my fault. I sell makeup and skin care products along with my medical transcription work and I, very unwisely, bought up too much inventory. It has put my family in a bind and now my husband and I are working extra trying to make extra to try to pay this off. I'm very blessed that he forgave me for my foolishness. We are working together to try to get things under control. That is the reason I haven't been on MyLot as much, because I've been trying to get as much work done as possible and just haven't had time to get on here. I'm hoping that things are getting better under control now and I will be able to be more active. God Bless Hon!! SheliaLee

Financially speaking... my life was better 5 years ago because i was working abroad... with a full time and part time job... so i had lots of money but very less time for myself... but now... i can't say the same... i have less money... but more time in my hands because of my flexible working hours... 5 years ago... i was married with no child... but now... i have a two year old daughter... so i can say my life in general is much better than 5 years ago...

Dear AmbiePam, Actually I have to say I am better off than I was 5 years ago ,I remember in that time I was just a high school student ,every night I have to stayed up quite late at night due to the college entrance examination here in my country and only my dad company with me and my mother prepared some instant noddles for me ,a sort of experiences I will never forget ,luckily I went to the college even though my college now I have studied is not so good as I have expected .Just in terms of stress from studies I have to admit that I was better off now .These all due to my actions as well as some people's help . Now molly have another important thing that is to get my master's degree in next year's examination ,that's why for quite a long time you will find molly is disappeared from the internet especially when molly is in school .This doesn't mean molly will never back in this mylot ,just because molly have some important thing to finish ,maybe a kind of thing to realize her dream to study at an excellent university. One thing for sure is that as long as this mylot is still here molly will be here for her dear friends even though as time goes by a lot of them disappeared

I'm just one big mess right now in comparison to five years ago. I guess you could say things just unfolded that way. I've tried to take action but it didn't work for me, and it still isn't working for me. Also was in much better spirits emotionally and spiritually. Physically, eh, I'm just getting older and feel it more, little aches and pains here and there but nothing too drastic yet. Money is no where to be found right now and that makes me quite a nervous wreck, which of course also messes with your health. I don't want to whine too much so I guess I'll leave this where it's at right now, lol! Take care there AmbiePam.

Sometimes we do everything right, and still things don't work out to our advantage. It's hard when it happens that way. I would like to think if we did all we could, everything would always work out.

I am actually, five years ago I lived in a council house and had no money at all, I had to budget for everything. If I went shopping I had to write a list and stick to it, there was never any spare to impulse buy. Five years on, I own my own house with hubby, and although I still write and stick to a shopping list I have money to impulse buy if I want too. I just dont because I never know if hard times will come back to me.

That is wonderful. I realize only a few are better off financially now, but I do enjoy hearing about the ones who are.

We are worse than five years ago and it is due to the economy not anything of our doings.. I beleive a lot of people are worse off and most of it is due to the economy.. I am wishing for the best for everyone but I don't see it happening for awhile.. Good luck to all..

Yes, I expected most people to be worse off economically. But I was wondering abou those who had health problems. Everything is more expensive, but I was hoping some people had some things that were better for them now than five years ago.

we are not better off than we were 5 years ago. we have less income and we are struggling more to pay our bills. it seems to be getting harder and harder to make ends meet. i feel like i take two steps forward and ten steps back and can never get anywhere financially. i am hoping that things get better and soon.

I was way better off financially 5 years ago. The downturn is partially through my actions, and partially circumstance. Beginning to see a light at the end of the tunnel though. Hopefully if you ask this question again next year my answer will be different... How about you?

I think that financial matters can be measured but it is difficult to measure psychologial, emotional health. I hope that things have changed for the better for all the mylotters friends here.

I wish I could say I was better, but I think I reached a small plateau and seem to be more or less the same. Maybe I have grown a bit emotionally but not enough to call it an advance - I"m still working on that. I can see that things are slowly getting to a better place but the path is a bit rough and it is taking some time. Will get there.. in time :)

Things have changed. Economically, I make much less than I did. But I stay home and work from here too. I had a son 5 weeks ago. That makes us a family of 4. So I feel like something is complete. In that way change has been a good thing. Even with sleep deprivation, it has been wonderful. So I say better now.

As I have grown in age I realized that I have become a more responsible and mature individual. All those hurtful, victorious, failing, and joyous experiences have molded me to become what I am today.Indeed experience is a good teacher.

Hmmm. Five years ago today my husband owned his own business and I was eight months pregnant with our first child. SO I would say that I am better off physically and mentally than I was five years ago. However, I am worse off financially than I was five years ago.
