Ok I'm from the south so I have not experienced this problem until moving to New York. In my neigborhood, there is dog poop EVERYWHERE on the sidewalk! Is it not against the law to let your dogs poop on sidewalks? I thought there was a rule that you can get fined if caught or reported. No?
If not, it should be! This is just so inconsiderate of your neighbors! I have to constantly keep my eyes glued to the ground to make sure I don't step in dog poop! There are piles of poop and then there's a pile of smeared poop where someone wasn't paying attention and stepped in the pile of poop. NOW you have patches of smeared poop all over the sidewalk!
So not only am I dodging piles of poop I'm also dodging patches of smeared poop!
Whenever I see someone pick up their dog poop I want to give them a reward! It shows that they are responsible and considerate of others.
I GET IT!! New Yorkers, for the most part, are rude, inconsiderate people...but come on guys...PICK UP THE POOP!! Its disgusting...it ruins the neighborhood as well...
I know me speaking about this will not change things but I just had to rant for a minute...sometimes I think I am the most considerate and thoughtful person living in NYC. :-)

NYC does have a law called the Canine Waste Law and it was implemented like over 30yrs ago...first time offenders get $50-100 ticket, repeat offenders get fined up to $250...etc
but no one abide by this rule....
it's doing nothing but making the city even more polluted and dirty!
Not to mention all the horse poop near central park!! ha!!
POOP CITY!

I am an ex New Yorker, although not from the Big City, just upstate. I smiled when I read this rant and you can rant away anytime about New York.
On the lighter side of things, NY is a piece of crap state anyway so maybe they are letting their dog poop elevate the value of their properties.

HA! I always wanted to live in NY, I was so HYPED before I actually came up here...I didn't know NYC was so dirty! They don't show that on TV! Ha!
I mean before coming up here I have never had to carry baby wipes or wet wipes with me whenever I'm wearing sandals just so I can wipe the black off my heels every 15 minutes! Ha!
I couldn't believe that when it first happened to me....but now I expect so I'm more prepared...it's all about adjustments!! ha!

If I didn't have a brassy area for my dog to poop in, I wouldn't have a dog. Then again, I would pick it up regardless. Where I live it is a law that you have to dispose of it.

I'm from the South also, but I've never had to deal with the dog poop. I live out in the country so dogs just run around were they want to and poop. I've never seen any on the sidewalks in the city ether. But I understand were your coming from, I wouldn't want to have to side step dog poop ether. I know you don't think this is funny, But I had to laugh at your experence of having to dodge this poop everyday.

HA! it is funny in a way because its so like ridiculous that its like that...I was walking behind some kids early in the morning on my way to work and it was during winter last year...the little boys were walking and playing of course not paying attention to where they were stepping and they walked right into a pile. However the poop was frozen because the boy was kicking a turd as he walked not knowing that he had just walked into a pile of poop!
hahaha!

well i live in the country areas of califorinia but i to have seen this in the bigger cities. you are right people just dont care about it. it is like they walk there dog just so that they dont have to pick it up in there house. i also think your right about the law about picking it up. I know there is in sacramento and LA. In sacramento people pick it up all the time. you rarely see it anywhere. unlike the homeless population. who should be fined for doing the same thing and not picking up after there selves.
