Dang fools driving. What kind have you run into or you have in your area?

Today, a guy had a cell phone in one hand, a cigarette in the other, and was steering with 2 fingers, coming around a curve coming at me. He did stay on his side of the road to my amazement. The other day, we had a really bad storm, and a guy was tailgaiting me. A woman was at a stop light putting on her make-up and kept doing her eye lashes after the light changed. My favorite are the ones that decide they're in the wrong lane, they just cut you off, no signal light or the light blinks once and they switch lanes. So what are your experiences with fools where you live?

The ones I really fear are the ones who read while they're driving. I leave for work well before sunrise, so these people have their inside lights on, and they're reading the morning paper as they travel down one of the busiest streets in the area. Maybe they think there's no traffic at about 5:50 am, but there is. I'm far from alone on that road. I was next to a woman on the way home today who was brushing her hair with one hand and smoking with the other. I guess she was steering with her knees or something. Not only is the traffic here incredibly heavy; there's massive construction going on, which complicates it all. These people are really frightening, because they're the type who cause accidents even if they don't have accidents themselves.

That is scary. That's way past distracted driving. Light on inside while moving. The change in light between inside and outside alone is dangerous, reading by itself is dangerous. That's horrible, can't believe these people don't end up killing someone or at least in an accident. We have cops at many of our construction sites and they love to pull people over. Many construction workers have gotten killed in my state. They now have different signs near the sites, "My Daddy wants to come home and hug me, please don't hit my Daddy." "My Mommy wants to see me grow up, please don't hit my Mommy." "Fines are doubled in a constructions zone." Still you actually see people speed up before a construction zone right after the "SLOW" sign. It said, slow, not GO, GO, GO!

Sorry, shouldn't have put s at the end of construction.

They double the fines here, too, but it seems everyone knows there's nobody in the police car parked at the start or end of the construction area, and they avoid them. Between the time I posted the earlier response and this one, I went out for milk, and there was a pickup truck going the wrong way on a one-way section of the construction area. It looked like one of the construction trucks, but it was hard to see. AND the driver didn't turn on their lights -- at 9:10 PM! I'm glad there are two houses between mine and the street, because I wouldn't be at all surprised if cars wind up inside one of those houses closer to the main street. Just yesterday, an 11-year-old girl was killed by a hit-and-run driver about a block from here! She was getting off her school bus, so they were supposed to be stopped, anyway!

I have seen all kinds of drivers but the one that gets me boiling is the one where there are 3 lanes and I'm in the middle lane going just over the speed limit and then you got some insane driver coming up on you from behind at an extreme speed and start tailgaiting you like they're expecting you to just change lanes just so they don't have too and the other lanes on your side have no traffic! Who do these dips think they are? When I see that, I slow down just to tick 'em off. When they get tired, they'll change lanes....ha ha ha

You're right of course. The third lane is for the fastest and if they want to be the fastest, then that is where they should be. I don't speed up for them either. You're new here, great that you're joining, hope that you enjoy it here and stay. Take care.

I do know what you mean about tailgaiting. I was always taught to follow one car length behind the car in front of you for every 10 mph you are traveling. Don't think drivers pay much attention to that theory or rule any longer. I have a cell but rarely use it when driving. I'd rather pay attention to the traffic. I drive an suv and other drivers are always cutting me off. It's not a car that can't be seen such as a little, compact car. I've learned with age to be patient but learned at a very young age to be a defensive driver. Maybe this is why I am accident free and ticket free for almost 50 years of driving. I learned to drive at age 13 on country roads so it was quite an experience since I live in a big city. I must be able to get in my car and give my undivided attention to what is going on around me on the streets or highways.

You're also not driving an average of 250 miles per week in most types of weather. I have three weather zones between me and where I can usually get a job. Plus the weather man can't seem to be very accurate up here. Was supposed to be 34 one day and never made it to 20. One supposed to be dry one day and I hit the three worst weather zones on my 25 mile drive home possible: rain hitting a cold road, sleet hitting an icy road, and snow on top of ice. Plus one year, no fog at my house, none at my destination, stuff so thick in between I had to go 5 to 10 miles per hour and could only see 1 foot in front of me, couldn't see to turn around and go home or I would have. Glad I'm subbing closer than the usual job that's 25 miles in each direction, but even a few miles can be dangerous here. But these accidents that I have had don't show the hundreds I avoided. I'd avoid more if I could just stay home all winter or only go places when the weather is clear and only in my own weather zone. I avoid anywhere from 1 to 10 accidents per trip on my way to and from the 25 mile trip. Now only have to do that 2xs a week for my PetSmart job and to go to the Doctors. Subbing, I to 12 miles away, depends on which school building, but at the worst time to drive, way more people on the road and they all tailgait.

There was a moronic woman at a 4 way stop who kept waiting, and waiting, even tho they had to stop, and AFTER they had stopped, and then finally went when I blew my horn at her.

There are people who stay stopped at green lights where there is not traffic coming from any other directions. My husband loves them, his comment is, "Are you waiting for another shade of green lady/fella?"

Hello writersedge. We've apparently got the same drivers here as you do where you live! The cell phone thing really gets me frustrated. I mean, I understand taking an important call and hanging up as soon as you get the info you needed. But the people that drive around chatting on these things are just insane. I've had them turning into my lane when I'm stopped as the first car at a stop sign, simply because they are cutting the corner so close due to not paying attention. Or driving under the speed limit in the passing lane of the interstate while chatting, with no thought whatsoever to moving over to the right lane so the rest of us can get safely home.

Due to a lot of cops on the interstate, haven't seen it on the interstate yet, good thing, our limit was raised to 65 years ago. But the rest sounds all too familiar. Thanks and take care.

In my area teenage guys seem obsessed with making their cars sound as noisy as possible and putting stupid spoilers and exhausts on them. Now, I know that expensive cars can be noisy but they sound nice-these cars just sound ridiculous, and they are obsessed with overrevving and it sounds like they are driving really fast, but you look at them and they're only doing around 30mph. They also seem to not know where 3rd gear is as they'll drive along in 2nd for ages, probably because they think it sounds good-it doesn't, it just makes them look ridiculous. driving whilst on the phone is such a bugbear of mine-nobody is that special or busy that they have to talk on the phone whilst driving, it's so dangerous, and its scary when you see the lack of control that they have whilst driving. As well as this, in my area taxi drivers seem to think they rule the world-they cut you up constantly, don't indicate, don't thank you if you let them in/out, and they do some really dangerous driving, it's incredibly frustrating!

We have teens and 20 year olds that do dangerous things, too, see above. Our taxi drivers are better than that most of the time so far. Yes, no one should be driving and talking on the phone. In our state, they're supposed to pull over and talk on the phone.

I used to shave while driving to work. It was with an electric razor of course, not a manual one with shaving cream and water. It was during the short period of time when I had to drive 80 miles to my job (one way) before I finally got a place to live that was closer. I don't drive anymore because of these incidents. And as a pedestrian I have my share of sub-human behavior. A few aiming their cars at me in parking lots and crosswalks pretending to run me down; a couple that decided to brush up against me while walking on the sidewalk; deliberately riding against the curb to splash water on me on very rainy conditions; ... I used to count drivers on cell phones while walking. Before a law was passed more than half the drivers were on their phones, and in the afternoon rush hour it got up to almost all of them. It doesn't happen as much now after the law was passed. Today I was downtown, crossing a one-way street with three lanes. A car in the middle lane stopped and signaled he was going to park on the right hand curb. He was waiting for a person to pass on the right, and another vehicle behind him started blasting his horn. The first vehicle passed and guess what the car behind him did? Passed him on the right side even though he was signaling a right turn. Then there's the time someone was distracted coming out of a parking lot. She rolled across the sidewalk and into the street, and another car started coming at her from the intersection , a good distance away, and she was moving very slowly, no car was behind the guy who was coming. There was plenty of time to slow down or stop if necessary, but no - he accelerated and swerved passing her on the right - of course blasting his horn.

Lots of behavior that isn't only impolite, but dangerous. Some people get a weird mentality when they're behind the steering wheel. Thanks and take care.

I think they're everywhere. I live in a small town that is pretty much 85 percent elderly folks. Now I have nothing against the elderly but there are a few hundred of them that definately should not have a drivers licence much less a vehicle. I have never seen anything like it. The post office is the place to stay away from between 9AM and 12 Noon. These old geezers park go get their mail and visit on the sidewalk, get in their vehicle start it then throw it in reverse never looking behind them to see if anyone is coming. The main street is vertical parking on both sides of the road. Some do get hit but I'm surprize there isn't more.

That's pretty scary. 85% elderly, wow! They say it will be like that here soon. Many people leaving to find jobs elsewhere. I wish them luck, I don't think there is much work anywhere. So post offices in the AM, good to know, I'm not at ours then, but I guess I won't be when I retire either. Thanks and take care.

I get the same stupid kind of driving everyday and these include recklessly merging into a highway while I am driving at a good speed causing me to hit the brakes to keep from slamming into him.

There are dang fool drivers everywhere. And they seem to be getting worse. Can't stand when people are chatting on the phones whilst they're driving. So busy talking they can't concentrate on the job at hand. I always give rude gestures to people who don't indicate or turn suddently in front of me. But I think the worst is, when someone is turning, say, left or right at an intersection and does not use their indicators. They simply slam on the anchors then turn. I am not a mind reader, for crying out loud.

Yes it does seem to be getting worse, doesn't it? Yes, without a turn signal, should be going straight and you wouldn't know to slow down. You're not a mind reader, they'll hurt someone before they learn, if they even learn then. Thanks and take care.

I've lived in France for 14 years and I can count on one hand the days I've gone anywhere in my car and not had another driver's behavior cause an adrenaline surge. They aren't ALL aggressive drivers, but nearly every day there's at least one driver whose nerve or stupidity dumbfounds me. Even little old ladies can be tailgating idiots who overtake in dangerous conditions, and they do this without emotion - they aren't late or angry, it's just the way they drive. They often tailgate so closely I literally can't see the hood of the car, just their windshield. I've seen people come so close to the car in front of them when passing that it looked like an optical illusion, as if one corner of their car passed through the corner of the other car. The worst are the delivery vans who, on top of being aggressive by nature, are in a rush. Also in France the streets are narrow so it's perfectly normal for trucks to stop in the middle of the road and start unloading. Understandable since they have no option, but regular people stop as well. I think that's my worse pet peeve here - people who just stop in the middle of the road with absolutely no consideration for other drivers, to go back and close their gate, or let someone out, or talk to a neighbor, or who knows what. There is room to pull over slightly so others can pass but they don't even give it a thought. Only their world and what they are doing enters their conscience. It's infuriating! And it happens all the time here.

Thanks for joining Mylot. Maybe the fools will see themselves and think about changing. I doubt it. I've seen many people complain about other drivers and turn around and do something stupid themselves, but one can hope. You never know. I hope this discussion does change at least one driver.
