Are people so desperate to make money?

I have seen a lot of people who stoop to such low levels as telling lies(which are a bit fatal), and cheat others, just for the sake of money. and there are a lot people, who portray themselves as poverty stricken ones. The other day, my dad helped a beggar by buying him some food, but later found out that the beggar owns a bank account with a considerable balance and has a couple of houses. Well, yet another day, there was a person who came for alms. we gave him some food and money(he said he had to use that money for a holy purpose). and now that person has started coming every month asking for money. I just don't seem to understand why people stoop to low levels to earn money.. Did you ever find anyone like that? Did you ever try to explain them? What was your feeling about it?
