Cookie HELP!

I'm trying to find what's wrong with my chocolate chip cookies. They're always so flat after I bake them. It's happened several times so I know it's not just me missing ingredients...

They should contain flour, baking powder, salt, shortening of some kind and chocolate chips. Are they oily? Do they become hard after they cool off? Where did you get the recipe? If you used the recipe from the back of the chocolate chips it should be fine, but you could try reducing the shortening a little.

OOOPS I forgot eggs, they should also contain eggs.

The recipe is one from a friend of my mother. They get really hard after I cook them and I can't figure out what it is. Is it the shortening that does that? I thought not adding enough shortening was the problem of the hardness..
