What would you do to cleanse the world of terrorism?

Would you participate in a human chain, carry placards, and shout "Down with terrorism" as you go on a procession, in the process obstructing traffic for miles around and inconveniencing people? That's what the students of all the colleges in my hometown did today. :( I don't think the terrorists know about this; so it won't stop them from dropping bombs.
Needless to say, I felt annoyed. I had gone to the city for some urgent work and was stuck there for hours. Ever experienced such a situation?
Cheers and happy Mylotting

You're right, of course, the terrorists won't even notice.
Perhaps the protestors would have more effect if instead they blocked the access to the offices of the multi-nationals, the investment banks, the hedge funds, the US State Department and Treasury Department, and tried to convince them to change their policies which keep three quarters of the world's population in poverty so that Westerners can stay obscenely rich?
So sorry you were inconvenienced.

Well said. I doubt it would have any effect on these greedy companies that have caused so much misery in the third world. Still it would be an interesting change to have them held to account for all the misery their greedy manipulation causes.
At the moment they have had their greedy fingers seriously burned but I doubt that this will stop them from doing it again in the future.

No because I do not believe that this method would be effective. Protesting is useful as a method of telling our governments that we are not happy with a decision or attitude. Sometimes it is the only way we have of letting them know that we are not happy. People talk about the ballot box but that is only one ever 3 or so years and in between times people want to voice their disappointment with a government.
However, it will not stop terrorism although it may help to make our governments act in the area. Not sure about that. To stop terrorism you have to stop the cause. If you know the situation that is causing people to become terrorists then the only way to stop them is to fix that cause.
If the cause is poverty, persecution, starvation etc then that is what must be fixed and that is what we are doing absolutely nothing to fix. People keep going on about it being political etc but if these people were not starving and suffering from persecution then they would not have followers to fuel their cause.

Destroy the Whole universe with a powerful bomb.. the terrorism will be gone..
It is unassailable and unshaken of motion and has developed strong roots..and no possibility of even thinking of removing it from the world..
Only thing that we can do, is that everyone must be self disciplined and learn to love the neighbor... Love all.. and serve all.. The first step for wiping out the terrorism from this world starts from us.. our inner self.. and not from any summits..are from conferences..

Hi Positiveminded, No human chain shouting down with terrorism is going to stop these people so the exercise was pointless really and just caused lots of congestion. I really haven't a clue how to tackle it though as terrorists are hidden enemies and can strike at any place and any time, cowards the lot of them as they don't fight fair. Huggles. Ellie :D

Oh really? in what place do you from? I always experience that here in the Philippines. People keep on carrying placards shouting on the streets which obstruct the traffic. I don;t agree with that way of stopping whatever they want to stop. Like terrorism? no way, the are just adding the trouble. The best way to stop terrorism is to kill the head of this bad acts. we can never stop terrorism unless they will all be wiped out.

Hey positiveminded~ I don't really think that these college
students give much thought to how they are inconveniencing
people or that the terrorists have no idea what they are doing
or would even care! They just feel good about what they are
doing and it makes them think that they are making a difference
and taking a stand on terrorism. When if fact, we know that
basically it means nothing but if it makes them feel like
they are helping the "cause" then I guess there isn't much
we can do! I know it makes little or no sense, but it really
isn't illegal so for the short time that they are protesting
there is nothing that can be done!

Does anyone remember the protesting back in vietnam days and how many protesters got killed? The protesting was as violent as the war itself or so it seemed. It didn't help a thing. I would have thought we'd have learned another way of expression by now.

Well, if you are born and brought up in Calcutta like me, you would find obstruction a part of daily life and smooth traffic would surprise you actually!
However, if you are seriously asking for suggestions, then I think it would have to a major policy decision on part of our Govt, at least here in India. Instead of the various ill-advised schemes that our HRD ministry comes up from time to time (which are nothing more than cheap sops), religion as a subject should be introduced compulsorily in all schools. Why I say this is because you cannot really take out religion from our lives (majority of Indians, anyway) and it has created a lont of misunderstanding over a long period of time. So, alongwith moral sciences and environmental subjects, snippets of all religions should be taught to all students, irrespective of their own religion. It can also contain the famous persons of those religions, how they contributed to nation-building, how they should make us proud as Indians and what are the good points each religion tries to teach. This, I feel, would go a long way in bonding Indian further and improve our understanding of each other. One of terrorism’s favourite source of sustenance is mistrust among people, so I feel this would to some extent, be a deterrent to it.

I have never experienced something like this and I too would be annoyed. If the terrorists knew about it, they'd be laughing their butts off. I have never seen the sense in protest marches or anything like that. If we keep peace within our hearts and be peaceful and honest and fair (at least try to) in all that we ourselves do, that is the first step. We can not as much as we'd like to, control the rest of the world. Obstructing traffic can create terrorism in otherwise peaceful people. It's a poor solution. Live in peace and peace will live in you.

I admit to 'protesting' several times when younger, I'd do it now too if I felt strongly enough about something. Most didn't have any effect at the time. The World still has Nuclear weapons, still fights wars, and the Americans didn't stop supporting the IRA who to some of us were Terrorists! One man's terrorist is anothers freedom fighter! I lost a friend in the Birmingham Bombing!
Some protests DO work. Usually they have to be a more 'local' issue!
We women wouldn't have the Vote or the Career choices we take for granted without them. We'd still be paying Thatchers Unfair Community Charge here in the UK too!
Yes they're 'inconvenient' for others but anything that draws large crowds is. Especially when you are working. I travel to and from peoples homes and don't have time to be stuck in traffic jams or walk so yes I agree they are annoying but I'm just as annoyed if it's a Carnival Parade or similar! If anything thats more upsetting, seeing everyone else having fun when you're visiting people who aren't bring's home the 'unfairness' of the World!
I'm sorry you had a bad day but sometimes people have a need to stand up and be counted!

Carrying placards, human chain and shouting "Down with terrorism" would just be a wasted time if that's what you think that you could help if you want the world be cleansed from terrorism.
Asa for me, I could probably do my share by educating people from my neighborhood, friends, relatives and everybody who hates terrorism. I will show to them the havoc that could these terrorist do in our society would affect our economy that our countrymen would suffer. I will explain to the people that this terroristic acts done by these people against our government would just be to let them be recognized. They are just fighting their own ideology and not for the common good of all the people. In fact they never care who would might be a victim of their bombings. They spare no one. Terrorism is one of a SATANIC and DEMONIC acts done by Godless people. Only by educating people against terrorism could might be one way of letting the people be vigilant and aware of the environment against this lawless and satanic terrorist.
