eMachines

Are eMachines still good computers? My desktop (of over 5 years old) bit the dust and I need to replace it inexpensively. I saw eMachines at Walmart for $298, with XP loaded. They were small machines (don't remember the exact stats), but I think they'd do what I need for now IF they're still dependable. Didn't they get bought out by someone?

eMachines now belongs to Acer, and Acer is one of Top 5 PC manufacturer in the world, so you can believe in the quality of eMachines, I think so!

Thank you! I've had Acers before, too, and liked them. My first machine was an Acer.

I hate having emachines brought in for me to work on. they tend to be the cheapest parts and not compatible with newer parts. E stands for Evil these days.

Thanks for the comment. I think yours was the only negative one. I haven't bought a new computer yet, so I'll keep your comment in mind, too!

Is there anything in particular that usually goes wrong with them? The last one I had lasted 6 years with very little done to it - never went to a shop or had anyone but me deal with it. It finally got to the point that it wouldn't recognize a monitor and since it was so old, I gave up on it.

it never fails that when an emachine comes into the shop for me to fix i spend hours on it and end up with a headache before its ever fixed.

i suppose it all depends on what you want to do with your computer. I have a Sony Vaio, and have replaced the hard drive in it 2X. It's a good machine, and if I could find another one just like it - I'd get it. Dell makes a pretty good one too. My main problem is - I don't want the "Vista" operating system. I really like XP the best. I hope you find something that you'll enjoy, and get your money's worth with. C. C.

I don't really like Vista, either, that's one reason this eMachine appealed to me. I've used eMachines before but I think they've changed. I don't want to buy something then be disappointed. Thanks for your comments!

What did you decide? Did you get another emachine or did you go with something else?

I decided to limp along with a laptop for awhile, until Windows 7 comes out and see what the consensus is on that. I detest Vista and don't want to get another computer with that on it, so that was part of my decision. I've pretty much decided to go with eMachines when I do buy a desk top, sometime this fall.

I've been curious about those little mini computers. I wonder what their capacity is.
