A virus could come from a number of ways and downloading an infected file is one of the sure ways. It would be good to scan files before using them. An active shield or an antivirus software that monitors all files as they are being used would be a good way to protect your computer. Cheers!!

You said you installed the antivirus but is it up to date?
What is your antivirus by the way

well, perhaps you can try avira antivirus. I have a lot of experiences with viruses and have been using different anti virus before. I have tried most of those that are very famous. But based on my personal experience, avira is very good. Best of all its free and it really works.

It sounds like you may need to completly reformat your hard drive to get rid of the virus. I have also learned that with some virus's even a reformat does not get rid of them. I dont know about that, but its what I have been told. I know that there is nothing more frustrating than your pc being messed up or broke.

My PC was infected by a trojan virus 6 months back. All I did was to install the WinXP on another partition (insert the windows cd at startup for this). And I ran antivirus from that secondary OS. This got rid of the virus.
Still I have two OS on my PC and I regularly update antivirus in both OS.
And I set up the desktop of the secondary windows, with a warning message Dont visit any site or don't play any game. This windows is for emergency booting.
