Earning Extra From the Things You Love to Do

Hi mylot. When I was working as an employee, I didn't like what I was doing and was thus unhappy. However, when I started working on a job that was my hobby and something that I used to love, my affection for the hobby suddenly disappeared and it's like I loathe to do my job/hobby already. Because of this, I've decided not to ever work as a photographer and just pursue it purely as a hobby. I don't want the same thing to happen to that interest. How about you? Have you had an experience earning a living off the things you love and ultimately losing interest in the process? Cheers

what you said is absolutely true. When I was young, I hated what I was doing and I hated to learn those stupid math, then I just quit college, although my parents kicked me out of their house because of this. But I did not regret, because I found out what I am really interested in. I started a small business to help people to get their brand or websites online, I provided the cheapest price with fast and stable hosting services. Now I am happy I did this and I am enjoying life.

That's a good way to earn, man: through business. At least you're your own boss. I hope to start my own someday (I still have no idea what to do as of now). Cheers and happy mylotting!

Hey, One thing is for sure, if you love to do the job that you are doing for work, then you will almost think that it is free money. Because it will seem fun and almost like a hobby, it wont be boring so it will be really fun money. Hope this helps and happy Lotting!

It never is boring, especially when the project starts to get incredulous but, as an employee working for a client, you have no choice. That's where it does not become any fun at all. Cheers~

I find that if you do your hobby as a job for someone else it no longer becomes a fun thing to do because you are under the constraints you have from doing any other job. However if you are working for yourself and making money doing your hobby, you have the power to keep it as a fun thing.

Yup, you nailed it. It no longer becomes fun when you don't have the freedom and creativity anymore to do what you used to love doing. At least, for a freelance writer like me, there exists websites where I can write my own articles and still earn from it.

So far doing what I enjoy is still an enjoyable experience but it is down to getting the right balance between over doing things and having a few other hobbies so that I am not just focussed on doing the same thing all the time. I am sure if I just focussed on just one hobby and making a living from that I would get fed up and dispondent that something which I once enjoyed had become a burden.

Yup, I totally agree with you. The balance should be there, but most of the times it is still totally upset because of the pressures of the client. Once it becomes work, it always come first than anything else making it annoying than enjoyable.

I am pursuing it at the moment. It takes money to get started, but i think it will come natural because i see it more as a hobby i enjoy.

Good for you. What exactly is it that you are doing as a hobby? How can you earn money from it? Cheers~

I know that once you do take a hobby and turn it more into a job you will no longer see it as fun to do. The key to preventhing this from happening though is to only do the hobby in moderation so it does not seem like a job. Granted that might not be possible, but if it is something home based then you can just select when you want to work on it. Work on it for an hour or two then take a break and od that a couple of times a day the work will get done and you will keep it as a hobby instead of a job.

That might be a good idea, although I think it won't work and is impossible especially when the pressure's on you. Sometimes it pisses me off (as a freelance writer) to find no information about what I was supposed to write, or when the client has no clear instructions. The creativity, the part that's supposed to be fun, is no longer there. Happy mylotting!

That seems strange, people often say that you should love what you do for a living and have a passion for it so you would never feel like you're actually working. I guess that doesn't apply to everyone. I love my current job and it's actually the kind of job I imagined I would have when I was still in school. I don't know if I'll ever lose interest to it, I think it's unlikely but I think that I would someday have to leave all the "techincal" stuff (the fun stuff!) for the incoming batch and assume a managerial post in the future in order to support the growth of the company. Thanks for the response on my discussion!
