A man is California sold his 14 year old daughter into marriage for $16,000, 100 cases of bear and some meat.
What a looser. How could anyone sell their daughter like that? 14 is just a kid. She can't even drive yet. The 18 year old man he sold her to was accused of statutory rape.
What do you think of this?

That is so deplorable it makes me sick. And you know what CatLady, he'll probably get a slap on the hand for this because his "ethnic" group allows it. You want to live in the US? Follow the rules or leave.

No, I never heard of Mexicans doing this either, ever. I also thought it was that other ethnic group that do the child marriages and set them up from when they're babies. Any way you look at it, I hope they rot in jail for doing this to that poor little girl. And I hope they can set her up in a decent household where she will be taken care of somehow. How sad this is.

I thought it was that other group too. But it seems that idiots who don't cherish their daughters are in every group. I hope she goes to some relatives that will love and cherish her just for being a child. If not relatives, then a family who wants to raise a sweet little girl.

I read the other article someone posted the link. The guy is Mexican. I've never heard of Mexicans doing this sort of thing before. The ones in my family never would. I wrongly assumed that the father was from those people who practice child marriage.

Unfortunately this does go on in the third world and for much less 'bride price' than $16000!
I am surprised it is going on in California! Good that there's laws to tackle this sort of thing there... Those in impoverished societies have no choice and no laws to stop this sort of thing happening!

California isn't the third world. This shouldn't happen there. Socking is all I can say.

The best part about this story is how they got caught, IMO. The father who tried to sell his daughter contacted the police when the person who had made the offer to buy his daughter didn't actually pay up. I mean, can you imagine that phone call? "Uhh... I'd like to report a non-payment on goods... yeah, it was my 14-year old daughter... no, I'm serious, the deadbeat didn't pay..." Oh, too good!
But this is a sad story to be serious; I guess there is nothing that some people won't do.

LOL You make it sound funny. Lucky for the girl she won't have to be married to the looser who bought her.

That is so so bad, how can anyone sell their child, everyone (well most) people at some time get proper fed up with their kid/s and prehaps say they would but to do it is a different matter. I could never imagine selling my child. That is so low and the person who bought her should have his bits cut off!! That poor poor girl must be so scared, well I hope she never sees them again and her life improves and she makes something of herself, she deserves people that love her not that want to use her! Wonder what the rest of her family think of this??

This is terrible. At 14, I'm sure that not many of us think about marriage, and having a spouse and such. At least, not often in North America. I don't understand how a father could do that to his 14-year-old daughter. After all, his job as a father is to protect, support, and love his daughter. This is how I see the role of a parent.

I wonder were the mother is in all this. She isn't even mentioned. Makes me mad that a father would do that to his daughter.

Just about anyone can perform marriages. All you need to do is get ordained over the internet. I have an internet minister degree. It took all of 3 minutes to get and now I can perform marriages in the USA if I wanted to.

Nothing surprises me anymore. I believe with the economy the way it is we will begin to see more and more of these outrageous stories. People are doing stupid things to get money rather than just trying to put a little more effort in making it an honest way. We need to begin seeing stiffer penalties for such crimes and not let these people believe they are getting away with such things.

I'm all for stiffer penalties. Human trafficking should have a very high penalty.

I hope he rots in jail. Unfortunately with the lax justice system he probably will be out before the girl turns 18.

I hope they both rot in jail. I'm just shaking my head in disbelief that anyone would do this to their own daughter. Only 14 and sold like a piece of meat to some perv. I really do hope they rot in jail. Unfortunately unless their laws are a lot stricter there then here in PA the 18 year old probably wont.
The father of our granddaughter only did 2 years and he was 40 at the time!

I want them to rot in jail also. All pervs should get a long jail sentence with really big hairy lifer's and special clothes saying I'm a perve on it.

Ok, I read the news item now, and while it doesn't say if this involved any particular ethnic group, it did mention something about arranged marriages becoming a problem in that community. Even so, there didn't seem to be much brain-power involved... I mean, complaining to police that your illegal transaction wasn't honored? And I wish the news media would stop referring to 18 year olds as men!

That's what I was thinking too. The paper is just to PC to mention any ethnic group that this is happening with in the town.

I can't say it surprises me. I wish it did but somehow this stuff doesn't anymore. All I can say to this is I hope that the girl wasn't raped by the 18 year old man that they arrested. All I can say is good luck to that girl for she is in one screwy situation.

I think that this is just sick. I do not know how anyone could care as little about their child as this guy obviously did. And where in the world was the mother? I woulod kill my husband if he ever did that, not that he ever would. I think that they definately should have been charged and I hope that they do some serious jail time.

He obviously doesn't care about his daughter. I wouldn't even sell my pets to a sicko for any amount of money.

This is something horrible. A father is supposed to love and guide his son or daughter and give proper guidance, but here is a fther who pushes her into trouble. I am sure this fellow was one with a crooked mind. No good person can do like this. it is areal pity such incidents happen and one cannot help wondering where this world is coming to.

A father should. My dad loves me and gave me proper guidance throughout my life. I look up to him because he is a responsible person with good morals. I can't fathom a father selling his young daughter.

hey that is a very pathetic act on part of that cruel father. In my opinion that man should be given a very bad punishment so that next time no one even dares to think like that.

I'd like to see the father in jail for life. I doubt that he will get it though.

That is crazy. I wonder what in the world is in the minds of people these days? Something should be done with the father.

The father needs to spend a long time in jail along with the 18 yer old who bought the child bride.

Well this is not something you hear everyday. I can't believe that any parent would sell a child for any amount. I could be starving on the streets and I would rather sell myself than even consider selling my child. i can't believe how desperate some people can be. Truthfully I think this father should be locked away and never released. This is just sick.

I don't think he did it because he was hungry. He just didn't see his daughter as a person in her own right.
