DOes anyone have an online savings account? Are they safe? I was thinking of opening one since the rate of return is normally more than at the banks. I just want to do a lot of research first.

They're as safe as any bank as long as they are FDIC insured. Most online savings accounts are offered by banks that also have "brick and mortar" branches, but there are some online only banks too which are also FDIC insured. The Internet has been a great boon for bank customers because now we can choose to do business with banks all over the country that offer online accounts -- I personally have a savings account with a bank chartered in New York though I live in Mississippi. Anyway, before you start an account you might want to check the bank's ratings at http://www.bankrate.com and http://www.bauerfinancial.com to see if the ban seems like a reliable place to store your money.

Yup they are safe- just join one that is a big company, from my research- a lot of people recommend getting an ING Direct Orange account.
But you can compare at Bankrate.com

ING is considered one of the safest and most reliable online banks. Their interest rate on savings is much higher than most banks. You do have to have a regular bank account, since you transfer money back and forth through that account. Transfers take two or three days before the money is available in either direction.

I use PayPal.com as my online bank account, and have since 2000. The percentage rate is slightly more than my regular bank account, so I try to keep money in there as long as possible before making a transfer.

I love ING. I have been a member for several years now. My sister referred me and they gave her $10.00 for me joining, and they gave me $25. I think they may still have this option if you want to send me your email address I'll check it out and see if they have that deal still going on.
As for safe, my husband and I have a financial adviser with Northwest Mutual. He was glad to hear about our savings with ING and recommended other types of investments to make with the same company. They are fdic insured, but it usually takes a day or two to withdraw your money.
