Leaving Fruits and Veggies out all day

I am thinking I heard on The Martha Stewart Show some time ago that she leaves raw carrots, celery sticks, pepper strips, grapes, etc. out in a fruit and veggie bowl all day long and when you feel a tinge of hunger you can munch on some of that. Have any of you heard that and will it be ok to leave them out on the counter and not in the fridge? I would like that because if they were in sight I would munch on them and not want other unhealthy snacks, maybe. Well, it sounded good any way. LOL You advice is very welcome. Thanks and God bless you!

I would think they would be okay out for a few hours, but any more than that I would think they would start to dry out and not taste as good. I sometimes leave a cup of raisins or Cherrios out for my daughter to munch on throughout the day.

Thank you for your comments. I do the same for my grand-daughter. I leave out raisins or sometimes goldfish so she has a little snack if she feels hungry between meals. I may fix the veggie and fruit bowl and leave it in the fridge and have it easy to get to so if I get the munchies. Thanks and God bless you!

I have a suggestion for you on the fruit part. I make this fruit salad that my kids love. It would be an easy thing for you to grab out of the fridge to much on if you put it in some small containers.
Chopped apples(I leave the peel on)
halved green and red grapes
sliced strawberries
sliced banana
orange sections cut into bite size pieces
Then I squeeze some juice from half an orange on top of the mixture and toss to cover. The orange juice makes it just a bit sweeter and it helps to keep the fruit from browning.

I think that veggies, especially if they're peeled or chopped, are best left in the fridge. I will quite often cut up a whole bunch of different veggies and leave then in a large tupperware container in the fridge for when we want a snack. Once they're there you are much more inclined to snack on them instead of chips or cookies. And if you're looking for a snack chances are you'll be opening the fridge anyways.

I think that is a super idea. I have them chopped and ready to snack in the fridge in plastic containers and I think that is where I'll leave them. I have my bananas and oranges on the counter because I can't eat them cold, they hurt my teeth. Thanks for the ideas. God bless you!

It sounds like a good idea. Now all I have to do is to replenish the two peppers, one carrot and bits of celery I have in the house and go out to the store in this minus 24 f weather to get some more apples and bananas so I can have some healthy food to snack on to. Maybe I should have said no to when my husband wanted a bag of rolls and picked up the fruit instead on Saturday.

I always leave fruit out in a basket (bananas, apples, pears, grapes, oranges, etc.) because they will keep well without refrigeration. And yes, if it is in front of you you'll tend to eat it more. However, I'm not so sure about celery and pepper strips or carrots because I thought those had to be refrigerated. I would think the pepper strips and carrots would dry out quickly and the celery would wilt and get limp instead of crisp. I'm not sure though!

I think you are exactly right. I will leave them in the fridge and snack on them from there. Thanks and God bless you!
