Education is the key?

Many people argue that even though they are highly educated armed with various scrolls of degrees but without employment they have only wasted their time and money getting those degrees. But I don't feel it that way. It is often said that knowledge is power. We can be robbed of our physical wealth or property but no one can take away our wealth of knowledge.
A man of knowledge can survive anywhere in the world. Sometimes when we have a lot of knowledge, it can go to our head and lead to pride and arrogance. Together with worldly knowledge, we also need spiritual knowledge to remain humble and level headed.
Having degrees does not necessary land us in a salaried employment but we can generate our knowledge by running lucrative businesses that can turn the tide in streams of income rather then be tied to an office where you have to go through ranks and files to get promoted and earn that meagre monthly salary. Your investment in education will not wasted if you invest your knowledge being your own president of your own company. If you are a degree holder and given the choice what would you do? Employment or business?

I took my degree (PhD) only last year, and at 64 there's unlikely to be any employment out of it for me, since the only jobs really going for an anthropologist are in academia itself, either as a teacher/writer or a researcher/writer.
If my health was good I would certainly look at the possibilities inherent in self-employed consultancy. Things like researching and writing reports for government agencies, or interest groups. An example might be researching the issues around commercial fisheries in a specific area and writing a paper on behalf of the fishers themselves or for an environmental or fisheries department.
But education is never wasted whether or not you get a job in your field, because it teaches you how to learn, how ro research, how to marshall thoughts and ideas together, and how to express those thogughts and ideas.

I agree with you that education is never wasted and can be applied effectively in our everyday living. Learning is an everyday process and education gives meaning to our lives. It influences our self-worth and the way we perceive our place under the sun. It is a gift you give yourself. I see you are a learned person and I am not surprise that you have given a great insight in your responses to the various discussions here. Good to share your ideas and knowledge.

I agree that education is never wasted regardless of where it leads or does not lead. My qualifications have never directly got me a job but they have helped shape me and I have used the qualities I gained in studying them in the jobs I have had since.
I would not change that for anything.

I agree that education is the key to getting the right job, but that one needs the correct qualifications. Here in the UK, I notice that many students are opting to study psychology (my line of work) with the view to working as a social worker or similar. Now, though, there seems to be a lot of people in this work all competing and some are not getting work. Therefore I would advise students to study the job market fairly closely and assess their chances of getting work when they leave university. :-) Derek

I kind of agree with you. We have to balance the job market with what we intend to major in U. Too many people going for one course tends to saturate the market fast and there will be jobless graduates left in frustrations. But graduates should not be too choosy.

People with degrees in psychology have a wide range of job choices, though. That's one reason that I chose this job. There are usually jobs available for people with degrees in psychology, at least where I live. If I can't get a job as a social worker, I can get something similar until something comes up in the area I want. One reason I decided to study psychology is that people will always need social workers and businesses will always benefit from psychology and need psychologists. There are so many areas of work and study that benefit from psychology and hire psychologists. We just never tend to think about it.

Well I loved my time at Uni and I will never regret it even though it did not help me find employment. It was not the fault of the education or the quals it was just circumstances. I did not go to uni to get a job I went because I wanted to go and it was great. I was sorry when it was over and I had to come back to the real world.
Unfortunately when I did come back to the real world there was a bad recession on, this was 1991 and there were no jobs so I missed out on using my quals for a career but I found other ways.
I have no head for business and would end up in employment which is what I did. I will never see the education as a waste as it broadened my mind in so many ways.

My college days were also my best years in life. If I could turn back the clock I would want to come back to that period. My education was never a waste either, though having worked for few years upon graduation I find working for myself is more satisfying as I can decide how much I want to make for a certain period of time and lay low when I have successfully reach my target. We are all armed with a purpose in life and having educated ourselves to a certain level we will always remain a knowledgeable person without being led from the nose by others.

If I could turn back the clock I would make a few minor alterations with the knowledge I have gained since and I would have had a different career. But then I would be a different version of me and I might never have met my partner so I will settle for the happiness I have found in this life.

owning your own buisness can be a hassle, i know, been there dont that but the hassle was worth it to me to be my own boss. the only thing i have to say about a degree[which i don't
have one] is that sometimes i think they need to look more in the future at what they are going to have their degree in & are their good job opening in that subject. my daughter-in-law got a degree in merchandising & never could get a job.just to go & get a degree doesn't guarantee u a good job. i think more thought needs to be put into them.

I understand business need more daring. It needs more people willing to take risks and play out on the skinny branches. I am presently running a business after having worked many years as a teacher only to end up being a 'slave' to my own business which is very satisfying but hard work.

i try to like going back to school because i know that i still have a lot to learn. i want to be knowledgeable in many areas that i have not encountered. no matter what anybody says, i know personally that education is helpful to my growth financially, physically, spiritually etc. i have learned in life that you must sometimes ignore what people say and think about what you really want in life because in the end you will reap the reward.

Learning is never an ending process in life. As long as our thirst for knowledge never ends we can always go back to college to pursue our education regardless of age. Definitely we will reap rewards for our never ending learning, it can be our life commitment.

for me education is not a key but its a tool to enhance and improve the knowledge we already have...i had seen many people who doesn't hold any degree and yet they became very successful and that's because of determination and self confidence to believe they can--i strongly believe that everything in this world can be learned as the saying goes "there's always room for improvement" i cant say that education is not necessary on the other half but what i just can say is believing is to survive and if i have to choose whether employment or business i say business..i had been employed for 10 years and now i wanna go on to business and challenge myself to be my own boss

I am not a degree holder, but I couldn't agree with you more. So you have a degree in computer science but can't find a job in your field, so what? You learned more than just computer science. Use it! If you refuse to look outside the field you majored in you may be in big trouble, but your education gives you so much more.

Learning through theory does not make an educated person competent with the knowledge gained through years of studies, it will only be effective in the workforce if it can be applied in practical. Majoring in certain field and working in another is as good as not having gone for a specialize study. Choosing right courses that interest oneself is important as it will not stress the mind. But whatever knowledge gained through higher learning can come in handy as knowledge gained is never lost even without gaining employment. We can apply our knowledge in our daily life instead.

yes i will agree that knowledge is really important in life to survive in life. but still knowledge that we get from school is not the most important thing in life. the knowledge that we gain in life is the most important cause that will make us be more prepared in life. and also having a wisdom is really important.

I agree with you. Knowledge earned from schooling is a foundation for something bigger in our life. It gives us the foundation to start our life and earned real life experience which I agree with you is the most important to human. Life experience is a teacher that makes us wise.

Yes, i agree.. Education is the key to success.. It will help you go places.. i mean, most companies hire college graduate applicants so completing a degree is a must. With all the recessions and everything, landing in a low paying job is okay. Just do your very best to be promoted..

ive been employed with education and employed without, ive also been unemployed with education and employed without. I know which i prefer, education gives you so many options and opens up so many other things to do. I dont thik employment can ever be seen as the only reason for education but rather should be seen as a way of broadening the mind, surely this is where the true value of education lies?
blessed be

You are very much correct, our education does not get waste. the more educated we are, more likely we are going to achieve success in our life. Education is very important and each one of us should study, as much as he/she can. When there would be educated people, there would be educated society and nation. Education will broaden people's mind and their vision.
Very good post!

Educations besides being the best tool for achieving wisdom in all levels, helps on achieving the full import of social behavior. It is of course the key to success in most walks of life.

Yes, you are so right to say that no one can rob us of our knowledge.
That is where all our years of investment in education went to. To pick up a wealth of knowledge that we may or may not be using when we step into the working world.
Not everyone is cut out to do business.
Depending on the commitment of the individual, coming out to do business is of course the ultimate goal.
Doing and running one's own business is not all honey and roses.
Some people can endure the toughness that comes with the startup of a company.
From managing the finances to multi-tasking the various roles required to run a company (from logistics to sales to payroll to purchaser to quotation manager... etc), the initial efforts required to run a business is tremendous.
Not everyone is willing to pay that kind of price that running one's own business demands.
On the other hand, a job with a fixed pay may seem lucrative. But depending on the company and the job scope, it can be just as fulfilling to the graduate.
Some jobs are just plain boring. But some are just plain taxing that it is at the expense of a life.
Just like cookies, no two batch are exactly the same. Given the many moulds that are available, some cookies are made better looking than others. Some taste better than others. No two individuals are cut the same such that everyone can fit into the business mould.
But I do find your discussion very interesting. Not every one can appreciate the education that they have. Something that no one can ever steal away from them.

Hello zandi458!
Education is very important. It helps us develop holistically... cognitive, affective and psychomotor. We can end up getting better jobs if we are trained and learned. I agree with you, having degrees does not necessary land us in a salaried employment and that we can generate good ideas about lucrative businesses that can turn into a good source of income. Unfortunately, not everyone has the capacity, financial at that, to start their own business. So they settle as ordinary employees. Well, yeah, for some, they would try saving so they could also start their own business one day.
I am a degree holder, with MBA too. I currently teach in one of the universities here in our city. At the same time, I also am an entrepreneur.

Education can bring us a lot of things.
I think education is a key to open a new door in our live. Though how to use the key in a correct way is still a problem to all of us.
Many young people think education is the way to make them can lead a better life, but after they get their job, they give the knowledge up, and after several years stay in the society, they forget what they have leanened in the college, and become a person without own thought.
I have planned after graduate from university, I want to have a job in my own field, and after several years work, I can have the ability to start my own business.
