How can we achieve world peace?

Aim high, I say: Let's see what the MyLot community can do to help the world achieve lasting peace. Here we are, a very diverse group of 158,000+ people from all over the world, all getting along pretty well - peacefully. Yet a day ago when a friend of mine who is a parent battled with her daughter over a simple demand to have her catch a ride with me to school, my friend said, "It's no wonder we can't achieve world peace - I can't even achieve peace in my own family!" So MyLotters - what is the single biggest obstacle to achieving lasting world peace, and what can we do individually and/or collectively to overcome these obstacles? Or is it even possible? And if not possible, should we just give up on world peace and shoot for world domination? Curious to hear your comments..

I think the best we can do about it is to promote equality among people. War usually start with misunderstanding and prejudice like racism so we should respect people regardless of their type, race, belief or religious affiliation.

I like what you say and I appreciate your sentiments, but I fear it's not as easy as you suggest. For instance if someone said they hate all Jews because their God tells them Jews are filth and they should be eradicated from the planet, would you feel obliged to respect them regardless of this belief? And if you don't accept that thinking, where DO you draw the line of acceptance of others' ways? How do you promote equality when some of the people whose freedom of choice and religion you commit to protect tell you they want the freedom to choose to kill you because the religion they freely choose demands they do so? Abortion is another great argument to define the limits of tolerance. Is it the right of the infant to live or the right of the mother to control her body? What if she's pregnant from rape? It's a tricky thing. From simple individual choices to nation-driven macroeconomic needs, achieving world peace seems a wonderful, but ultimately impossible, goal. Thanks very much for your comment and for your positive, compassionate outlook. I agree tolerance is a great place to start.

Hmmm.. It's quite complicated tsk tsk but honestly, when I started reading this discussion, I was in an instant became aware of world peace. I'm thinking of becoming an advocate and if you won't mind, I wanted to ask you the same question.. What do you think can an ordinary person do to promote world peace??
