The ring itself is a central character, oh I know that it is a thing, an object, but within the story it is as if it has a life of its own, the ring is key, and it does talk to those who have it, or wear it.
The ring is the reason for the quest, the ring is what brings all the characters together, and while there are those who would say the central character is Frodo, as he is the one who must bear the burden of destroying the ring, and others who may think it is Aragorn as he is the one who should be king, but again I have to say it is the ring, itself, and what it represents that is the main character.
or should it be called "my precious" ?
But over all with these stories, the great thing is that it is about all the characters, it is about the whole, not the parts, and yes how the parts make up the whole, so that all the characters are key to the story and how it unfolds.

i agree with this!!! all the movie is about the ring!! of course you got a lot of characters that have a great part on the movie, but everything goes around the ring, it there was no ring, then no movie would have been made!!!

I guess it is almost correct. without the ring the film was nothing. so i wud say yes, perhaps the ring was the only thing of main importance, without it there was no story
so i agree

While the Hobbit by Tolkien was a story that to me focused on one character which was Bilbo Baggins, I feel the Lord of the Rings Trilogy was about an ideal, and the ring was the symbol of that ideal, which is what made it a character in itself to me.
One of the things I liked was that importance was placed on several characters since that was how it worked, that you take out any one of the characters, and the story is lost, it doesn't fit as well.
And I know that so many see Frodo Baggins as the hero hobbit, but to me the greatest hero of the story not the central character, but my favorite and the hero was Samwise Ganges. His loyalty, his unwavring devotion, reminds me of a poem called the Thousandth Man by Rudyard Kipling
Because Frodo could not have succeeded in his journey with out any of the other characters, but most especially not with out Sam,
I suppose that is part why I say the ring was a character, even though it was an object, it represented the opposing force of evil that was to be conquered, not only that with the way the ring could seduce others to its will it kind of showed the conflict within us all the good and evil we all have within and must deal with our temptations in our lives, and sometimes our friends help us with.
I guess that is also part of why I say the ring is a central character.

central character is indeed mr. frodo..but we find that there are also many characters who have a major role without which frodo would never be able to accomplish his mission..sam, aragorn, gandalf..they all are very important characters..even gollum, who helped when at the end the ring tried to possess frodo..gollum not there it would have been disastrous..

Frodo is the central character. At the end of the film, once back in Hobbiton, he is writing the book "The Lord of the Rings" (in the same way that Bilbo wrote There and Back Again or "The Hobbit") which he hands over to Sam to finish off when he sails from the Grey Havens with the last of the Elves.

The central character in the Lord of the Rings is none other than the ring itself. But when it comes to actors I believe it is Sam, Mr. Frodo's friend. He is the main character for me because he never left Frodo and he really proved that he does not have any claim to the ring. He did not have any thoughts of getting it and he is indeed a friend. He never left Frodo and he saved him so many times. Sam is a good example of a real friend who will never let you down. There are a lot of times when Frodo wanted to gave up when they where traveling to the Mountain of Fire but Sam encouraged him not to give up. Also I like the character of Gandalf the Grey. He is a very good wizard and he led the fellowship.

The central character is Frodo because the resolution of the conflict rests on him. There are other characters that are equally important to the story, but it all comes down to Frodo and the ring.

Ofcourse none other than Mr. Frudo the reason is simple that he was the only perso who could carry the ring to the mordor, rest all would have used the ring for themselves.
