Do you have any tips to help us unorganized get organized? I started a discussion earlier today about cleaning my office out. Well really I had to shovel it out first. heehee. Once I got all the papers work cleaned off then it was time to tackle my crafts to organize but did not know where to go from there. So I decided to call a friend over to help me get organized.
Now I was wondering if my friends here at myLot would like to share someone of their organizational tips with us all. We all need to start the new year organized and I need help in that area.
Can you spare some tips for a needy fellow myLotian?

LOL--I must be one of the most neurotically organized people going..I like things organized so I know where everything is and I don't have to do a "Now where did I put that?" type of thing. I have several really large plastic tub-like containers..I keep my archival binders that hold my thousands and thousands of photo slides. Each binder is labeled according to subject....and believe it or not say with my flower slides they are labeled according to the particular species of flowers in their Latin names..like Family Asteraceae, then subdivided even further labeling the Dahlias, Chrysanthemums, etc--(told you I was neurotically organized--LOL) Each slide has an ID number too which is how I know I have 21,049 slides.
I too do crafts and even have separate containers for them...I keep all my seed beads in one container, the crow beads in another, jewelry findings in yet another...uh, think you get the idea.
As for papers..sheesh..could start going through a lot to see what I could junk out...but I have a bureau drawer that serves like a filing cabinet for me...whenever I go to the post office I grab a bunch of those large priority mail mailers and use them like manila folders...I stuff each mailer with particular types of papers, say all my disability type papers I've gotten and label them so I know what each mailer has
SO..am I neurotic or what?

You want to come and organize my photos and my life? I have a filing cabinet and do have them in a system which is old and I need to relabel them. That is for another day. I have some books that need to be put in a binder or something hard plastic because they where crochet books from my grandmother copyright in 1942 and kind of falling apart.

I think that is the thing with getting things in order, at first you do a get bigger mess pulling it all out and slowly sifting and putting things were they go.
My tips for mail is as soon as you go through it trash the junk, put bills in the due file ( I use a calendar and list the bill and amount due on the date due). A filing cabinet for files. Make files for whatever you keep so that you know where each thing is.
For crafts, if you do more then one separate them. If you can get see thru containers it helps a lot too. We do lots of crafts and if you can label see thru ones it just seems to make it easier. Shelves are great to store things on too. We have all the jewelry making items in see thru containers on shelves and labeled.
I know that there is a lot of work to organizing but it is so nice to have things looking good and know where everything is for when you want it.
GOOD LUCK!

Sounds like you have the crafts done. What else do you have that you feel needs organized?
You can also go online and look up things like decluttering, organizing tips and such and there is whole lot of places that will give you ideas.
Again good luck, It isnt always easy ( I know Im trying to declutter and organize more things) but it is worth it in the end.

Thanks for your advise. I do have plastic containers that I have my embroidery in and scrap booking items in the other one. I also have a threat holder hung on the wall which I have spools of thread on. I do not sew with the sewing machine much but I do use the thread when I mend stuff and do my cross stitching.

you don't want to my house at times then espcially when i've not cleaned as much as i should for a few days. or i clean up and the other half and son come in and make a mess leaving me to clean it up. it does get to me, i can't stand it when some people don't mind having their place like a bomb hit it, when friends are over.
my horse shed if a pain to clean at times, it's dusty in there. mum helps me clean it up then it doesn't take long for it to be back the same way it was, but i've got rug rack now so i've got to put a heap of rugs back where they came from up there.
one thing i wanted for new yr as to be able to keep the house cleaner than 08.
don't be affraid of having lots of plastic boxes, we have them here in australia. their great for kids clothes, toys, what ever you want to put in them. and you can stack them. that's what i use to help keep some things tidy.
have fun cleaning

I am the process of cleaning my kitchen and dinning room. I have to clean off my table and change the table clothe then sweep and mop the floors. I also have to put clean clothes that I folded away and vacuum tomorrow. My hubby is asleep in the living room so I will not vacuum tonight.

i'm going to finish cleaning up today after i get back from my mums place. hopefully i won't have my partner here, cause he makes it slower to clean up cause he doesn't always like me doing it while he's here. so i get draged down and i don't like it. especially if i'm in the right mood for cleaning.

Focus and relax. Panic and worry will give you something to do, but it will get you nowhere. So just feel the rhythm of your own pace and follow that. Plan. Things will happen more smoothly if you do. This includes planning for contingency, emergency, and unexpected events to avoid surprises, write everything down:create a to-do-list schedules, and progress reports. Prioritize. Start with the most important and go down the line. Maximize your gadgets, the wireless phone, cellphone, computer, the internet can help you finish your tasks sooner, make an effort to organize tasks according to priority.

We only use our dinning room when we have company the rest of the time it is stacked up with mail and junk. I know how it is when we need to clean it off.

I've been helping people get organized for years. The first thing we do is haul out all the trash. Everyone is always so surprised what a difference just doing that makes. Then, we move out everything that doesn't belong in the room and put it into the rooms where it does belong. Following that, we get rid of everything that could be donated or sold in a garage sale. Those items are either boxed up, or put into lawn and leaf bags. Once we're done that, we start with the largest part of the room and start putting things away. In the case of an office, we start with the desk and start getting all the paperclips where they go, finding places for pens, organizing paper, etc. I find that, when tasks are broken up like that, the whole job seems a lot lighter.

Thanks for the tips. I did do that with my office. I started with my desk and worked my way around the office. I had to go through the paperwork so I did not throw the needed paper work away or the stuff needed shredding. I then put the papers I want to print on the back of the sheets in a pile.
I put papers that belong in three different binders in their binder, just laid in and went through them later.
I got stuck when it came to the craft stuff. I now have most of my stiff done.

These methods have helped me get organized.
1) Clear the clutter.: GOLDEN RULE- anything that you have not used in last 1 year, you prabably will not require it again. Dispose it.
2) Get lots of files or boxes. Do not try to be a perfectionist.i.e do not start by filing everything datewise, Just dump in respective boxes & work on one box every day.
3) We all label files But forget to mark/ label the area. Take one step futher, mark each area with the name of the items you will store there. This way you will spend much less time searching for things.
Personally speaking : being unorganized is much more fun than the pain to stay organized.

Thank you for your advise.I will have to think about the 1 year rule because I have dishes that I only use once every few years when I have a huge dinner party. I also have some craft items that I will use later that I have kept from year to year. So the year rule may not be a good one for me.
