What Happens When The Lights Go Out?

It has been a dreadful night last night when the electricity tripped several times while I was surfing the net and what I feared most is the effect on my computer of being rudely shut down when there are power failures. It was raining heavily outside when the whole country was engulfed with darkness as it is once again an electricity blackout. This is a regular happenings in my place and last night was the worse as before the total shut out the lights were flickering as though teasing me for being too long in front of the computer before totally giving way to darkness. I went through another round of anguish and frustrations and pointing my fingers to the inefficient national energy company. I have to spend most of the night in sweltering heat, trying to read the newspaper in the dimming candle light.
What about your country, do you also face this kind of regular blackouts? Who are we going to blame, the energy company that supplies electricity who cannot keep up our demands or our over consumption of electrical power with all the modern gadgets used which has consumed lots of energy? Rather then blaming the power company for not being able to keep up with our demands, we should instead learn to conserve our energy instead. So conserving energy is not only going to save us some money but probably makes us use it more efficiently anyway. Perhaps we are spoilt. I know people who lived through world war II who are obsessed with keeping every bit of string that they find because they remember the days of rationing. When you have been deprived once, you appreciate things more.
Maybe a blackout is simply a reminder to look at ourselves and to understand that we (not some mechanical contraption) are the cause of our own failures.

Hmm... I am thankful for the fact that this kinda thing does not happend to me.
Though we do have to pay a price for the steady supply of the electricity.
But there is no disruption to the suply.
I cannot imagine the kind of damage it would do to my computer if it happend for a few times consecutively within the same night!
Did you ever consider getting a PSU (power supply unit) for your PC then?
This will allow you to perform a graceful shut down of your PC in the event a power trip occurs.

I think it is best that you do.
Cos with such constant power outage that you mentioned, the HDD will sustain damage from the sudden loss of power.
And when it is damage, the data lost may be too expensive to recover.
Also, on top of getting a PSU, ensure that you back up your valuable data on a regular basis. Keep a copy on some external harddisk or something.

We live in the country so we have electrical problems when we have bad storms, when they start we shut down everything because when it comes back on we can have power surges which will get past any surge protector on the market. I always keep candles close.

I am also right now living in a country and whenever we have bad storms the cables are snapped off from the uprooted trees which causes blackout. I should shut down everything when there is blackout which more often is forgotten. Thanks for that reminder.

We had a serious wind storm here last September and we were without power for for four days. Some residence were without power for up to ten days. Luckily it was not cold or warm outside so there was no need for heat or air conditioning. But it was the longest four days of my life. Boring too! I read a book and cannot even begin to tell you the last time I picked up a book. All of our food was spoiled and had to be tossed out. Since the entire neighborhood was without power we had to drive quite a bit to find a fast food joint that was open and the traffic was horrible. People were driving like idiots as some drivers were not aware that a traffic light becomes a four way stop if the power is out...not a free for all. You don't realize how much you depend on electricity until it's gone. I was thankful when it finally was turned back on and had serious internet withdrawals.

That is terrible, four days blackout is a nightmare! Even it is only a few hours I lost my steam and direction of what next to do while waiting for the power to return. Yes, electricity has become a necessity in our life especially when it comes to internet. We are totally cut off from the world outside and the medical field might have to find out a cure for serious internet withdrawals!

In our country block outs are very common, when we used to be kids we used to like such blocks as instead of studies we used to play antakshari, then a stage came when I hated these blockouts, but now I have started enjoying blackouts as I feel that god has asked to take rest from work so it is a blessing in disguise.

I can't remember the last time that the power went out here (I'm in the UK). If it happens, it's usually due to some natural cause, power lines being blown down by high winds for example. I don't think that we ever get outages due to demand exceeding supply. I might be wrong about that, but it's not happened where I live. Not yet anyway...The candles are always ready, just in case.
On the subject of your computer being shut down if there is a power supply failure. You can get an uninterruptible power supply. This is a device that will continue to power the computer if mains power fails - at least long enough for you to shut down properly. They are probably expensive though.

Oh my goodness sorry that you had a rough night, I know how you feel because at my old apartment the power would shut out a lot during the slightest bit of rain and sometimes the power would go out even when it wasn't raining, I use to cut my computer off as soon as I noticed rain or even a little thunder to avoid any damage to my computer, and the worst thing about the power shutting off is that it would sometimes stay off for hours, and my phone is connected to my computer so when the power to my computer is off my home phone dosent work ether I hate it when that happens.

Not regularly, but it does happen. We have our computers, and other electronics that we use the most on surge strips with battery backup, so if they power does go off the computers don't go off, they run off the battery. Also we have a generator in the garage if we need it.

In our country power failure is a regular feature. The demand of electricity is increasing day by day but the government has failed to increase the supply and the result is power cuts and power failures. It is like vicious circle which is becoming bigger day by day.We have power cuts which can extend up to 6 hours in winters and 8 hours in summers and you can very well imagine the plight of our people who do not have any option but to bear these power cuts.

Hello my friend zandi458 Ji,
Failure in power is not un-common to any part of Globe. It happens daily in my NCR and even in most Metros, where life come to stand-still. But i appriciate your feelings, for reminding those days of second-World-War, where things were rationed , I am talking about daily needs, Cloths, kerosene were badly hit. Even, we used to get ration items includinggrains/pulses. So we must save our energy to make our days brighter. At times, i have seen street light are not switched-off, even after day has broken. So we suffer. We all have to be vigilant in our daily duties towards our nation. may god bless everyone and have a great time.
