The K stands for Kilo, representing a thousand standard units, such as 50 Kilometers or 20 kilograms.

I couldn't tell you. I've often wondered the same thing myself!
All I do know is that using a 'k' for carat is, like, huh??? Doesn't 'carat' begin with a 'c'???
I mean, they changed the acronym for electrocardiogram to ECG from EKG because 'cardio' is spelled with a 'c', why not 'c' for 'carat'? Doesn't make any sense to me!

its funny because you just get used to doing things and then one day you stop and realize you have no idea why you do it that way

Should I fry your brain more? Why does the K stand for the gold standard of karat and the C stand for the gemological form of carat?
I think the thousand "K" is for Kilo which is metric for thousand...but who knows!
