what if the world finally runs out of oil?

hi all! oil is a form of fossil fuel from which almost all fossil fuel-based stuff such as petrol (gasoline), kerosene, diesoline and the likes come from. being a fossil fuel, this means that it's a non-renewable form of energy. this, in turn, means that this kind of fuel source is not renewable and has limited (vague term) supply. with demand for oil increasing rapidly each year, there are already speculations that the world's oil supplies may run out in the next few decades. some speculate that it would happen in 2050. some say 100+ years. there are already "minor" signs, such as Dubai anticipating running out of oil by 2016 (if i recall correctly), that's why they're rapidly (and successfully) shifting from oil industry to tourism and investments. running out of oil makes me wonder... what would happen if that happens? with automobile makers and governments still very slow with the progress regarding renewable energy (yes i find it slow because if they were fast, we would already have hundreds of thousands of AFFORDABLE hybrid, electric or even water-fuelled cars), i think there would be a lot of chaos how about you guys? what do you think would happen when the world finally runs out of oil? thanks and happy mylotting!

Maybe we should all ride bikes so we could save some oil--just kidding. We could use sunlight or water power to instead oil.

Life will find the way. I think oil will not run out of sudden, but it will fade out gradually. At the time of the scarce oil, the price will be more expensive, according to the law of economy. When the price more expensive, trigger for a research quickly.

Oil is really not that scarce. They just don't want to drill. There is plenty of oil so don't ever worry about running out. But maybe they will let us do something else I doubt it the government makes to much money off oil.

I think they are slow because they don´t see that happening soon. But for example if they discovered that would happen in 10 years for sure things would go faster. Have you ever seen a government wanting to be out of money? Have you ever seen investors wanting to be out of investments? When they see an investment will stop working they fastly look for a new one. That would be the situation.

In the 21st century we rely on oil (petrol) and gas for transport - cars, lorries, ships, aircraft - as well as electrical power. We cannot survive without oil and gas, and when the supply runs out the great engine of Western Civilization will finally grind to a halt. We are heading for a event that will be remembered as one of the great disaster of human history, and life is going to get harder for everybody as the day of reckoning draws nearer.

Obviously there needs to be a concerted effort on behalf of the world´s leaders to switch from oil to more renewable energy sources. Hopefully incoming president obama will address these issues better than Bush did, we need to start planning for the future now, if we don´t it´s going to be a massive shock hastily switching from oil to other forms of energy. We have seen some recently seen more hybrid cars being developed and the prices of such cars coming down, hopefully we can build upon this in order to build a more sustainable future.

people will always have a way of bouncing back. once oil become scarce, definitely those projects involving generating power by harnessing the sun, the wind and other possible sources of energy will all pick up fast and quick. on its first year alone, everyone will be cooperating in order to reach reliability of power and energy sources before the picture becomes scary enough. although there have been a lot of identified alternative sources of power and energy, we all know that not much has been done in the advancement in this field. since this development will require world governments unified action in research and development, the lead (which is the united states at all instances and as always) does not show sufficient interest to pursue this goal, all other governments just simply lie in waiting with that wait and see attitude. so my friend, unless the united states moves its fingers towards making use of the other sources of power and energy, there will be no significant development at all in this regard.

Ahh, another person interested in the oil situation. This is definitely not a renewable resource and needs to be replaced well before we run out. There has been inventions for vehicles that don't need to run on oil or fossil fuels, but they have been bought by not only the vehicle manufacturers but also the oil companies. Too many people have decided that the oil supply isn't as the environmentalists are saying. That we have plenty of oil to supply everything. Instead of accepting that notion, we need to work harder at developing alternative sources for powering our vehicles and aircraft. We have the knowledge to invent the alternatives, we have the resources to build the inventions, and we only need to convince the public to opt for the alternatives. Otherwise, we may end up going back to the horse and buggy! With the amount of building and the loss of farmland occurring, I wonder how long we will be able to produce corn for ethanol? Of course if we could figure out a way for vehicles to run on urine we would have it made!!! After attending an environmental biology class, I have become an avid recycler! Not only do I take the stuff in that I get paid for, but I also take the stuff in that isn't money generating for me. I reduced my carbon footprint by 60%!!! My out of date books go to the paper recycler...the wood gets used for heating and cooking so that I don't use exorbitant amounts of propane. My green waste goes into the compost heap for nutrients for my garden. Clothing that I am either tired of or can't fit into goes to the thrift shops...and the list goes on. I used to generate two 32 gallon bags of garbage a week and have reduced it to a small kitchen sack a week. And that bag isn't full either.

It would be an awsome time if all the oil reserves and crude oil were to completely disappear from the face of the Earth. Omagine what would happen to the millions of cars, buses, bikes etc which run on petrol. Man is inventive by nature. I am sure when realisation dawns on Mankind that oil is vanishing someone will definitely come up with an alternative source to runt the vehicles. while electric cars already exist though not viable at the moment , they will certainly become marketable then. I think solar -powered transport will also become available especially in countries where sunlight is available most times in a year.when manufactured in bulk it will become very cheap. The best thing is that such transport will greatly enhance the quality of our environment making it much cleaner and less polluted. Rainfall which is becoming scarce due to changes in environment will improve and life will become more better.
