Pet owners are giving up their pets to area animal shelters because of the economic condition our country is in. I am horrified by this as this to me is like giving up your children. I adopted a cat, Smokeybear, over 8 years ago. Our situation is pretty tight right now to as we got foreclosed on and lost our house, lived in a kitchenette for awhile until I lost my job and have even lived with my daughter until I ended up buying a used older mobile home but even through all that I managed to keep my cat. I know in some conditions you don't have a choice but I would never give up my pet unless it came right down to the fact that I just couldn't feed him or her anymore and you know what, the shelters will give you food if you ask because they really don't want you to give up your pet unless you have no other option. If you don't have a pet please think about adopting one from your local shelter. These poor guys really need homes and someone to love them.

I totally agree and I think people just get lazy, or the cuteness wears off and if they think that taking their animal to the shelter is going to get them a new home they should think again because many of these poor animals end up being killed because the shelters can not keep them forever either. Whenit comes time for me to get another animal I will go to a shelter again and adopt. Those animals really need someone to take care of them for life not just when it suits them.

My cat, Smokey, is adopted from our humane shelter eight years ago. I also have a kitten my husband rescued off the frame of his semi trailer. He heard a baby kitten meowing when he stopped and docked to get loaded. The kitten was sitting between the trailer frame and the back wheels of the trailer and had road 14 miles on the frame without my husband knowing she was there. The kitten was just weened from its mother and could fit in your hand. She was a tiny little tiger striped black, brown and cream shorthair. He named her Harley and said any kitten who could hang on for 14 miles to a semi trailer frame deserved a name like Harley. She is now about four to five months old and has grown like a weed and thinks she rules the house. Smokey thinks she is crazy and just tolerates her.

yes i agree, if anyone looking for a pet please go to the spca and adopt one. I did i have 2 dogs i adopted, and they are great dogs. Thunder and Jake are there names, Thunder shepherd/husky and Jake Lab/shepherd. My hearts go out to those animals at the shelters, they have no clue why they are there. If you cannot adopt one for your reason, try to donate to help the shelters out, with all the animals there, We are all they have to help with the animals, Which they all deserve a good and loving home.

My daughters work for a cat rescue and it's amazing some of the excuses people will have for giving up animals. Sad. You're right, I'd have to be literally unable to feed my cats before I'd ever consider giving them up. And then I'd do everything I possibly could to make sure that they had a good home rather than dumping them on a shelter.

dvmurphy,
I am so sorry for what you have been through. I am just as horrified that this is happening. You don't give up part of your family like that! Real pet lovers would never do that. I have been through the ringer to. Being sick for the past 4 years, not being able to work, living in a crampy little apartment, and living on barely nothing every month. So the economy hasn't really effected me because I have become use to being so broke. I had my kitty stuffy for 18 years before he passed, and pepper 15 years before she passed, and now I have boots, he is 4. I would never ever give my cats up!! Under no circumstance! It has been hard struggling like this, but he is always taken care of! Yes, I agree. Please adopt a pet. To save them. They need the love.

I completely agree that this is a terrible situation. I work at a veterinary clinic, and sometimes people bring in their pets for boarding and never pick them up. They think we will try to find them a new home, but any animal abandonded with us goes to the shelter. It breaks our hearts every time. I am pleased to say that both of my cats and one of my dogs are adopted/rescued. I love them dearly and I will definitely adopt again in the future.
As for my pets' care, they get better health care and food than I do. lol! I'm the kind of person who spends all my money on my pets and leaves none for me.
