Birds and Planes?

It seems as though there are an awful lot of incidences of birds hitting planes. Considering the amount of birds and planes that are in the skies at any givin moment, we are pretty lucky that more planes are not falling from the sky.

I heard a pilot saying on the radio that if a bird, or birds hit one engine the plane will not crash. Yesterday's crash happened because the plane hit a flock of birds and caught them in both engines. It is less common for this to happen.
I can understand how a plane engine will suck in a small bird, but surely an aeronautical engineer could design a fine mesh shield that would prevent impact between birds and moving parts of the plane?
