I have family there and like it; I've visited a number of times. YOu're right near the mountains, there's good food, and the University community means there's a vitality to that area. There's also a funky kind of shopping area with boutiques. And plenty of historical sites.
Of course, your original comment was from a few weeks ago, so your friend may well have gone there already.

My husband and I went there a few years ago for a family reunion. We had a wonderful time and loved the city so much. The culture there is amazing. We saw the indian reservation with the big stone ovens outside there homes that they made their breads in. I loved the bread too. Old Albuquerque was a fabulous place to visit. People had thier wares set out on the sidewalks on blankets, most things handcrafted by the people who lived there. There was crafts I had never seen before. I also loved seeing the adobe houses, most very modern and expensive looking. It's a huge city with lots of night life if your friend is looking for that type of action. The city seemed very friendly which made it easy to get directions or just talk about the history. It is at the base of the San Andrea Mountains, and we spent one day going to the top. On the way back down we visited different types of tourist traps, with native relics, hand made soaps, etc. I am in Illinois so I had not seen messas or mountains before. I hope to go back again someday. It was worth the two day drive for us to get there.

my hubby's bestfriend used to live in albuquergue and he visited him there twice, once during their balloon fiesta. he said he had fun looking around since there were plenty of good sites - state parks and national monuments. we are actually planning to go there next year.

It's in New Mexico, it is very populated, it is beautiful, and can get very cold in the winter.

I live here. I'm not a native, but I have lived in ABQ now for 6 months. All the stuff you would normally see in a mid-size city is here - traffic, malls, shopping plazas, hotels, airport, hospitals, taller buildings in the small, congested downtown area, residential suburbs sprouting and sprawling. Nitelife - oh yes - head for Central Ave. Zoo, Aquarium, Botanical Gardens, Small amusement park, lots of resturants of various tastes both large chain and mom and pop. Movie theatres, bowling alleys....it's all pretty much here. Live entertainment too. Petroglyphs - i kid you not. Farmers markets, flea markets and don't forget the incredible tram ride up the Sandia Mtns. I'm enjoying my time here so far. I hope you will enjoy your visit.

It was nice, dusty though, especially when the wind blew the dust off the mountains. It was lovely at night, the blanket of lights in the valley was pretty. Hot air balloons every day in the sky. Walking trails, bike trails. Tons of museums to visit.
