Healthy Late Night Snacks?

I'm trying to make a concious effort to eat a little better, and at more appropriate times. Typically my appetite hits me in the evening, and that's normally when I snack on all sorts of junk food. Regardless how much or how often I eat during the day, the evening hours up until bedtime always do me in. I've been trying to think of some good, healthy things I can munch on during those hours. I've thought of veggies, those aren't bad at all, and I could eat them right up until bedtime without a problem. What are some other ideas, other than veggies? Keep in mind I don't like popcorn or potato chips.

Sun Chips, celery sticks with peanut butter or ranch dressing, carrot sticks with ranch dressing, apples, oranges, grapes, tea with lemon and honey, Nutri-grain bars... see the thing is, you should try to avoid food at night if you can. The reason for this is that eating before sleeping makes it hard for you to digest food before going to sleep. Eating so close to bedtime is not really a good thing. I try my best not to eat before sleeping, I exercise and read books instead, or I watch a movie.

During the summer I bought a lot of cultivated blueberries. I froze them spread out on cookie sheets so they would not clump together. Then I put them in containers and back into the freezer. Now when a snack attack hits I take out a few of the frozen berries to munch on them while they are still frozen. Unfortunately most of my supply is gone by now. Someone told me it would also work with grapes. I have not tried that.

My mom used to freeze grapes and eat them like that. I had forgotten until you just mentioned that. She'd always have grapes in the freezer, and never in the fridge. I got to a point where I just wanted cold, but not frozen grapes. But they do make a nice treat.

Hey Kats! I know what you mean because that is my problem! I have always been a night muncher! I love to eat late at night! That seems to be when I get in the mood for snacks! I like to eat cookies, cake, prezels, candy! All the stuff that is really fattening! I don't like munching on veggies! So that's out! Veggies are dinner! I also am not a big fan of popcorn, but if I really want something to crunch I will make myself some microwave popcorn and it really isn't bad! I have made myself get used to it and I will eat it if I really need to have something! I still haven't found too much else that isn't fattening to munch on! You can try those 100 calorie snacks! You just have to make yourself stop after one pack or bag that's all!

Pretzels aren't bad at all, except for the sodium. They're a no fat snack. I just don't like them. I'm more of a chocolate cookie type of person.

If it is early in the evening I usually go for a whole wheat sandwich with cheese or meat on it. The protein seems to fill me up. I try to put something veggie on the sandwich like a slice of tomato or leaf of lettuce. I will have a hot drink like a decaf coffee or a weak tea to go with that instead of a sugary drink. If it is later in the evening I usually go for a cooked cereal although I occasionally have a bowl of cold cereal. A nice big bowl of oatmeal with some brown sugar and milk is filling and easy to make in the microwave (use an oversized bowl as it tends to bubble over if you use to small a bowl). You of course have to use one minute or quick oats, which I buy at the bulk food store so it is cheap. I find I crave sweet things late at night so the sugar on the oatmeal seems to satisfy that craving without going for the chocolate bars or ice cream. I have to watch what I eat because some foods give me heartburn and would keep me up at night so I have a restricted choice of foods for late night snacking.

You mentioned that you had trouble getting off of soda. Have you ever tried adding some flavored stevia to water? Or, if you like the carbonation, have you ever tried adding flavored stevia to carbonated water? It is a healthy option that might satisfy your soda craving without the unhealthy soda part. Kale chips are a great healthy option. Get a bag of already washed and cut kale. Spread the kale on a cookie sheet and spray it with some spray oil and bake about 5 minutes. It comes out crispy and yummy. Most people I have come across that don't like vegetables love it. Me included!

P.S. Oops sorry, I just realized you said no veggies and, of course, kale is a veggie. Another suggestion: With cooked garbanzo beans, put them in a bowl and add about a tablespoon of oil, mix it up. You can add seasoning too like salt garic pepper, etc. Then spread them onto a cookie sheet and bake. They will turn kinda crunchy like nuts and will keep. So, you can have them on hand for your late night munchies.

When I crave snacks and want something healthy, I eat some string cheese or a tub of fruit yogert or a glass of chocolate soy milk. (Silk) is a good tasting soy milk but (8th Continent) is the best there is, it is so rich and creamy. Both of these can be hot or cold.

Do you like pretzels? Those are considered kind of healthy. Apples covered in caramel sauce? Dried fruits? Almonds?

No, I don't like pretzels either, but they are healthy (minus the salt).

How about fruit, or yogurt? I find that having something easy to grab is the key thing, so prepare something healthy earlier in the day and pop it in the fridge ready to grab when the snacking bugs grab you. If they catch you unprepared, that's when you're likely to go for something you'd wish you hadn't.

Fruit is a good snack for the evening. I have the same weakness when it comes to the evenings. My night time snacks consists of cereal, fruits, bagel chips or yogurt. I wish I didn't like potato chips but unfortunately I do. I just simply don't buy them and the temptation isn't there. Popcorn I could and do live without! LOL

Popcorn isn't bad, it's one of the healthier snack foods, except for the fact that you need oil to pop it with. But I don't like how it sticks in your teeth, it drives me nuts so I'd rather not eat it. Sadly I'm not overly fond of fruit, and fresh fruit is expensive. Nothing else you mentioned sounds very appetizing to me either. That's the problem, I crave nasty food not good, healthy food.

It is best to avoid eating before bed - although it is VERY hard not to do so... One thing I would suggest is make sure you are getting a enough protein at supper time... one large healthy serving (6 oz) of lean beef, chicken or fish with LOTS and LOTS of vegetables is the best supper you can have... to help kick the hungry feeling after supper be sure to drink lots of fluids.... I've read a lot that your body doesn't know the difference between hungry and thirsty... so if you keep the fluids up, you will be less hungry. Easier said than done, I know... but keep on drinking water and other low-calorie, caffeine free drinks in the evening and evenutally you won't need all the evening snacks!

I do drink a lot, although it's mostly soda. I've tried switching to water, but I just can't do it. Though I'm at least making the switch to calorie free soda. I've begun to only drink calorie free soda just before bed, to cut down on the amount of calories I'm taking in before I go to sleep. My dinners usually are very healthy and we do have lots of vegetables. We've even started having a salad along with our usual dinner. So that helps a lot.

I recommend Fruit shakes! Healthy and it will make your stomach full somehow. You can also try it with oatmeals so you'll be loaded with fiber. It will remove the toxics in your inner body and you'll feel refreshed. Don't eat junk foods and high carbohydrate foods at night before you sleep because it will gonna make you fat and unhealthy..

Popcorn and potato chips are the yummiest! :) Anyway, try drinking a big glass of warm milk. it's healthy and filling. It also makes me think that I won't get cavities because milk is supposed to be good for your teeth right? :) Fruits and nuts should also be okay. It's best though not to eat a lot close to bedtime. Not only is it fattening, it might not be good for digestion if you sleep right after eating.

Well considering I just finished a handfull of M&Ms, I guess I don't have the magic answer. LOL Wish I did, because night time snacking is my biggest weight challenge. I can do it all day, but when 10pm comes around I'm raiding the kitchen. One thing I have done is buy those 100 calorie packs of chips and cookies. The key is to stop at one pack. (something I struggle with) But how about dried fruit, granola, or mixed nuts? I've also bought the sugar free ice cream sandwhiches and those are really good too.

Well, you mentioned fruit, so that is out of the question. I picked up some Special K cereal at the store last night and I ate it as a snack earlier with some skim milk. There are many different flavors so I'm sure you would find one that you liked.

I try not to eat anything two hours before I go to bed. Here are some ideas though. I make a mock banana split. I use half of a banana a container of low calorie yogurt (no more than 60 calories) and I drizzle some sugar free chocolate syrup on it. Feels very decadent. How about a piece of fruit or some sugar free pudding with a few nuts sprinked on top. I like to spread Laughing Cow cheese on celery. Maybe an apple with a small amount of peanut butter spread on it. Yummy. I also like fresh berries with a little bit of whipped cream on it.

Midnight snacking is not the healthiest of eating habits but if you have to, I suggest you pick fruits or light, whole grain snacks, probably even breakfast bars will do. I won't suggest anything greasy or buttery.

I can't connect any Late Night Snack with Health in my mind. Even the healthy snacks will bring your stomach lots burden in the time it should have rest, and with a full stomach, the sleeping quatity will be effected. You cann't get a healthy late night snack, just try to reduce the influence. Facing such problem, maybe it's time to do some change, hard but will do you more health. Doctor said serious situation this can develop into is a Night Eating Syndrome, the harmfulness is obvious. LOL,for you, it's just a bad habit, just be careful, Don't spoil yourself, and Don't forget to brush your tooth before going to bed for keeping dentist away.
