Our cat Wilbur has been totally upset since we have been having work done on our bathroom. The noise, of course, scared him with all the pounding they have had to do. But he just knows something different is going on. He stays close to us all the time like he is afraid we are going to leave him or something. He has walked into the bathroom looking around like he is trying to figure out what is going on. It is so funny but it is pitiful too because he just can't understand it. LOL!! God Bless! SheliaLee

I am sure it is quite an ordeal for him. He don't know whether to hide or try to protect you. lol He must feel safe when you are with him.

Hi!! We have noticed that he has been sleeping in either my chair or my son's chair in the dining room at night. He acts like that makes him feel safe. We sure do love our Wilbur!!

Cats are very sensitive to new faces/intruders into their routine lifestyles. They depend on their people caretakers to protect them. I would be very wary of where Wilbur is at all times. He just might "freak out" and head for the door. If you have a relationship with a cat like he/she is a "human child" they are very dependent on you and trust you, almost to a fault. You must be sensitive to his feelings and reassure him, hold him or pet him, feed him treats, etc. In some ways, a cat needs more than a child does because he/she cannot always understand things on a level like a human does. Be kind and gentle with him during this rough time.

I agree with you completely and we have tried to do just that with Wilbur. We have given him lots of extra petting and paid more attention than usual just to let him know everything is going to be okay. Thanks for responding!!

Poor thing. My dog doesn't like anyone in my apartment. When someone comes to fix the sink or change the air filter, he isn't happy until the stranger is gone.

It is pitiful, animials are so much smarter than people give them credit for and realize when something different is going on.

Yeah animals can tell when somethings going on, and things are different. It is funny, but like you said pitiful too, I feel sorry for him, and you can't explain it to him, just pet him and give him alot of attention so it doesn't bother him too much.

You are right. We don't mean to laugh because it really is pitiful but sometimes when he does something unusual that is funny too it is hard not to. But we know he is just not used to his routine being upset so we are doing everything we can to make it easier for him. Thanks for responding.

I bet they enjoy the conservatory now that it is there, though.

The first day the contractors came in Wilbur hid under our bed. Then when he did come out he took off running outside the first chance he got. Since then he has been staying outside when they are here.

yes they do, they have their food in there and they sleeps on the chairs there too. Tamara

Well, I feel that even Cats are not used to change, and any extra noise that might effect them and their normal routines will upset them. I think it is a normal action for your Cat to be scared. All you can do is sit there and pet and comfort him and reassure him that this is for the Best, and will all end soon as well.

We have sure found that out. All of us have been trying to comfort and assure him the best we can that everything is okay. He just doesn't understand. But hopefully by the middle of the week everything will be finished and things will go back to normal.

Have not seen you in ages, friend. Yes, our cats, and other pets, know when things are changing. It sounds like you are getting some remodeling done, enjoy.

LOL. That sounds like what my dog does. He cannot stand noise or a sound of a hammer. He usually hides in the bathroom LOL.

The first morning they were here Wilbur hid under the bed until I started calling him, but after that as soon as they have arrived in the mornings if he was inside he made a beeline for the door and doesn't come back in until they are gone!! LOL!!

Isn't it funny and yes yet pitiful our little Maltese does the same thing and you should hear her cry when I go get my coat and purse, she knows very well mom is leaving. I'm never gone for long at all, but with it sometimes doesn't take much to turn these little guys world right upside down. I'm happy to see you back posting, I'm always looking forward to hearing wedding bells for Amanda and Mark!!! I did miss you as well SheliaLee. Take care and hope your weekend is going good.

Wilbur can definitely tell when something is different around here. Animals amaze me at how smart they are. He always runs to meet us when we come home ready to come into the house, even if we have been gone only a short time. LOL!!

That is a really cute and funny story. Wilbur is such a funny name to me, how did you ever think to name him that, no offense meant.

Hi Rozie!! No offense taken at all hon!! We didn't give him the name. He used to belong to an elderly couple that my husband delivered mail to. They gave him the name Wilbur. They were both getting in bad health and wanted Wilbur to go to a good home with kids so we took him. We just never did change his name LOL!!

We all get upset when our normal routine gets out of whack so I suppose his is too! Extra people around....strangers to boot...the noise....and disruption! They are funny aren't they? Almost human!

Yes, they certainly do act almost human at times!! Wilbur is very smart and very funny. He keeps us entertained with his cute things that he does but he has definitely been disoriented with all the commotion going on.

Cats hate change. They also hate big noises. I hope everything gets back to normal for Wilber very soon.

We are hoping they will be finished by Tuesday or Wednesday. He has had the weekend to get rested from all the change but tomorrow it will start again. We are just trying to make things as comfortable for him as possible.

Oh yes they can sense that something isn't right. But the funny part is cats are so nosy they have to go find out what it is! LOL We still joke about my cat. All in one day I brought a new dog home and had a cookout and he was MIA. We couldn't find him for a whole day. He went into hiding because he didn't like all the change going on and not to mention was very skiddish of the new guest! LOL

Wilbur has done several funny things during this time. One day after they had got the floor put in he went in with just his front paws and then he turned around and ran back out!! The next day he got a little braver and went in all they way and started sniffing around LOL!!

Most cats don't like changes around their home. Mine are an exception.... My oldest cat, Smokey, has gotten used to me re arranging things and just wants to be sure I leave a spot for her. Of the other two, the youngest, Patch, is very patient and sees moving furniture as some sort of adventure. Our lazy long hair cat, KC (Krazy Cat), likes new arrangments or if we bring tubs in from storage, like Christmas stuff, before we can unpack the tubs he has to claim the top of the heap as his new perch and defend it from the others. I am an inspector for a polling place and during elections I pick up my supplies about a week before. All three cats love to sit or play on the boxes of polling booths and other equipment and will try to keep me from packing it out on election day.
