Hi there,I would like to say first off that this is a serious question and not just an attempt to upset or rub anyone up the wrong way.Why in religion,Both christianity and islam,Is it that women are treated as second class,Sub standard even? How can religion accept such shoddy treatment of women? And why is it like this? What have women done to warrant such treatment?I have been researching this over the net and some of the things that i have come accross have left a bad taste in my mouth,It's quite frankly unacceptable and makes me even more proud that i shun all organised religion,And i can see it for what it really is.As stated earlier,This post isn't just meant to offend,I really would like answers to the questions,Thank you for any response.

Oh I know how you feel, I would have thought women being the ones that actually give birth and all should be treated a whole lot better than they do, the only thing I can figure it is, it is just the ego and insecurity most times of men, to keep women where they want them, as far as religion is concerned i think with all the killing and unhappiness they all seem to bring all religions should be gotten rid of, we all should just live with what our inner voice tells us and stop listening to these people who preach from books that no-one knows who wrote...stepping down from my soapbox...

What is most sad in my mind is that religion tends to dress itself up, so to speak, and act as if it is accepting of all people and classes. This is simply not the case, most easily determined by reading the holy books. Islam is more demeaning to womens rights (in a blatant sense, anyways), however Christianity is also (more subliminally) a religion that dimishes the rights and roles of women. I find it difficult to figure out why some Christians blatantly disregard the bible's (aka: their god in physical manifestation) opinion on so many topics. For example, women are not supposed to become preachers. Throw on the television and it is apparent that that "idea" has been diminished in the name of feminism. I think that the fundamental reason why women are seen as a "sub-class" is due to the story of the world's beginning in the Garden of Eden, where Eve is said to be the perpetrator (or first one) whom inevitably became a serpent herself and deceived Adam (causing him to eat the fruit). I think the church does a lot of hiding of things they do not want released to the public. Heck, the church probably has its own public relations department as it is.

I couldn't agree with you more ulalume,Whenever you see anybody religious on the TV,They come accross all heavenly and wise and very just and fair.Whenever we have a war they come out saying how people of all faith's should live together in peace. But all you have to do is scratch beneath the surface and you will quickly see that one thing religious people are not is tolerant,They are the most intolerant people on the planet.I don't believe in any of the organised religions,And i'm not sexist,Racist or homophobic,Yet a preacher will stand there and tell me how important it is to be accepting of others and live peacefully,When his true feelings are the complete opposite,But hey we all know religion is crammed full of contradictions,They just seem to brush over that fact.

It has always been a sore spot for me too. Things have improved a bit over the years to be sure. What religions teach confirmed for most men that they were superior human beings and we had to be submissive...or else. Thank goodness for the women's movement! We have come a long ways but still have so far to go. It is not much different than other discriminations such as homosexuals and blacks. People use religion to justify their hateful discriminations and judgements. They tend to pick and choose what parts of the bible are meaningful to them. Good post. It did not seem offensive at all but we'll see. These types of discussions tend to get a bit heated.

I think it had also been like that in the old testament. IN the book of numbers they were getting a count of all people and in those count women were not included. In the first book in the bible where adam and eve as created it was mentioned that they had 2 sons, some say they also had daughters but was just not mentioned in the book. I they only had 2 sons i think it would not be possible to procraete and increase our numbers.,

I know how you feel.
I don't understand what exactly makes women any less important than men in the world. It's the men who send our countries to war, and send millions of our soldiers to their deaths.
It's usually men who are in the highest positions within society.
It's always the men who get their own way; they're the ones who are seen as the dominant ones in the majority of relationships.
And I don't understand why.
And I don't think I ever truely will!

This kind of treatment of women has been around for years and years. Women in the states have had to fight and claw their way up to have men even realize that we are not just baby makers and what I call maids in the house. I think men still have the tendency to think that they are better than us. We have come a long way but we have a long way to go. And when I say men think this way about women let me explain I am not putting all men in that catagory. I have seen some men treat the women with a lot of respect. But there are just as many that it is there due for a women to wait on them. Things are different than what they were years and years ago but there still is a long way to go for women.

It is not "women" in my opinion. I believe it is because a men have always been the dominant ones so to speak and has carried over, over the years. Similar to you not wanting to start something, I am expressing my opinion based on the evolution of man kind.
Everyone has experienced as a victim and at some point the first class citizen so to speak. You can look not only to the different sexes to find examples yet also to the varying ethnic groups as the same. Great question.

Religions were made by MAN, Men have been trying to control women since the beginning of time. God does not feel this way. Gender is a parameter of a physical body. Since we are spiritual in our true nature we are all equal. Life is much better when everyone is free.
