I am preparing my daughter for her first year of high school (in a public school). I have spent over $300 on her uniform but it will cost another $300 for her winter school uniform.(Uniform is compulsory)Her book list was over $500,which consisted of a school diary,a dictionary, and the rest was book hire for books and a fee for every different subject, computer fee and materials fee for each subject,my question is,What happened to the free education system that we are supposed to get?

Are you sure it's a public school and not a private school in a public school district? My kids have gone to public school for years and never have I had to pay a fee for books or uniforms. They don't have uniforms and the only fee I have to pay is the lab fee for the band. That's it. Books in public schools should be free to use all year. Of course you still have to buy school supplies.

No it is a public school,my son goes to a different high school, and I had to buy him uniforms and school books and still pay charges or levys for different subjects as well.

I guess the tuition and other schools fees are free... but for things that kids will personally use... the government think that that is the responsibility of parents... in my country... if you want quality education for your kids... send them to a private school... but the cost is really way overboard...

It's a lot of money for sure but hopefully it will last her for the first couple of years ,providing an item doesn't get lost so don't forget to label her name on her uniform .Education is not free even after everything is paid for you still have your hand in your pocket for this and that. cheers.
