I usually go grocery shopping once every two weeks but of course that doesn't count my in between trips for bread and milk. I know some people just go when they need to and sometimes people go every couple of days for this and that. I find for myself that it's better to go every couple of weeks and buy enough to last for a while. Buying in bulk can save money too if you have the means to store your food. So how often do you go?

I usually go once or twice a week. It depends if I'm out of something if I'd go more often then that. But the two local chains with flyers have different start and end times so one starts on Mon-Sun the other is Thur-Wed & actually it works well with when we get paid the way they have been running them.

I go shopping anytime of the week and not as often. I usually buy what I only need and for food, I buy food which will last for a week. It's a lot cheaper when I buy food which will go on for a week compared to when I keep on buying food on a daily basis. I save more when I buy on a weekly basis.

We generally do a big shop once every couple of months and in between that buy any perishable that we might need. We have a chart on the pantry door and as we use things or open a packet, cross it off. Then before we go shopping we take that chart and make out out shopping list of what we need, taking into account what we still have left of course.
The night before, we go to the town where some of our children live and stay the night with one of them. It is always a family gathering as everyone comes there to see and have a meal with us anyway. They have collected all the special catalogues etc so we can work out what we get from each place. There are actually 4 large supermarkets in the town where they live, 3 of which are within walking distance of each other and the 4th one a couple of kms away. So we visit each one of the supermarkets in turn and get the best bargains from each one of them.
To get things home we have the car refrigerator to keep the frozen stuff stil frozen and the cold stuff cold. We also use polystyrene boxes for the excess cold stuff, if we have any that does not fit into the car fridge that is. Because we make and grow many things, there are lots of things that we do not need to buy which a "normal" family does, so that makes it easier.
We allocate so much money for the shopping and stick within that. If we have more things than money, then something has to go back onto theshelves and if it is the other way, then we might get a bit extra or sometimes we get a treat.
We do check the local supermarket specials every week and if they have something extra special, we will get it there. Generally their specials are the same as normal price in the town where we do our shopping and so if they are that price we will buy some.
The fact is that the more often people go shopping, the more they spend and so that is why we try to avoid going too often. We do keep an accurate chart because it is the only way or else we would end up running ouit of something or with a pantry full of stale stuff. When we unpack, we always put the new groceries to the back so that we use the older stuff first. My partner is very organised because she had to be when she was a single Mum and when we moved in together, I just picked it up. Then too it was a necessity because of our distinct lack of ready finances for the first little while.

Jen my mother was very organised and had to be when we first arrived here in Australia as we had NO money. I cannot remember those first few years as I was very young but she had a list of sorts all through my childhood. Then my partner had one too and hers was a necessity as she was a single Mum with 4 children and no support from their father.
For the past 10 years our aim has been to be debt free on oiur small farmlet and own all the equipment we need. When that time comes, we can quit our other jobs which means reduced income of course. So we are practicing economising now and hope that will hold us in good stead in a few years time. It takes practice to be thrifty but so we are not miserly as well, which is why if there is any money left over from groceries or whatever we treat ourselves.
Yes our shopping trips are family gatherings as well. We might only be a couple of hours from some of the children but it is a long way sometimes when we are busy which is why we take the couple of days when we do shopping. That is enough time to do what we want and not too long leaving someone else to mind the farm.
Also 2 days is just long enough to "ruin" our grandchildren and then leave them to their parents.

Heyya oldboy! You and your wife have got to be by far the most organized people I have ever known! I would have never in a million years thought of a chart. Your shopping trips are also family gatherings! I hope I can be half as efficient and organized as you one day. I try to be organized and money savy but it doesn't always work out for me as planned.lol. Thanks for another awesome response!

I'm by no means ready to be a grandmother yet but I do secretly look forward to spoiling my grandchildren rotten when I get them. I would like to be debt free as well but I don't know.It would be hard for me although I have no real bills except for my house and electricity. Everything else(cable, internet, etc)I could do without if I had too...well..cable.lol

In all honestly I do the main grocery shopping only once a week. But there are times when we have to run to the store if we decide to make something that we don't have an ingredient for, or to stock up on pop or sports drinks if we run out. Things like that.

We use to shop for groceries every week...and on fridays since that was payday...but since things have gotten tighter over the last year I would say we shop for groceries every 2 wks now, and we go to a smaller grocery store where you bag your own groceries and the price of the food is less..so we get more.
We all gotta do what we can to survive right now....LOL
happy mylotting!!

For our main grocery shopping, we go once in a month and for our daily needs such as breads and milk etc., we go the market daily and as and when the need arises. We being working couple, it is not always possible to visit the market every now and then, we always find time at premium........LOl!

the roomie gets paid ever 2 weeks so we go that weekend for food
We get 3 bags of cat food, that'll generally last us a couple of weeks too.
we try to get everything we need then, but we almost always end back up there at some point for a few other things.

Hello!
I go grocery shopping every week. My mother has to go and doesn't drive and I'm her only child so I take her every week and do my shopping at the same time. I try to not have to go more than that but sometimes something comes up where it is necessary.
God Bless!!

I've started shopping once a week, sometimes once every 2 weeks if we can last that
long. I was finding that if I would make one huge shopping trip a month we were
letting things go to waste. And I've been wanting to cook with more fresh produce
lately so I have been needing to make weekly or bi-weekly shopping trips to keep fresh
produce in the house. It seems like we have been spending a little less by doing this.
When we were making one big shopping trip a month we would still make several small
shopping trips throughout the month and those trip would be the ones that would add up.
I've noticed that I don't need those small trips anymore so I've been saving money in
the end.

How cool! We are actually in Fountain City right now. We are getting ready to buy our first house so who knows where the wind will take us. I'd really like to stay in Fountain City though. I like the schools and the prices for houses are more reasonable on this side of town. Nice to meet a fellow East Tennessean on here!

Good for you for saving more money! We can all use a little more of that and cooking fresher is always nice. I wouldn't do well with a monthly trip either.
We are neighbors friend! I'm about 45 mins from Knoxville. As a matter of fact, that's where I grew up. Fountain City is where I'm from originally. Thanks for responding and it's a pleasure to meet you.

Hello JenIn...yes its best to buy things in bulk since it saves you the bother of gowing to the grocers all the time.I buy all the non perishable items in such a way that they will last a month approximately.I get my milk delivered at my door every morning.I buy vegetables and bread as and when the need arises, and if I get really fresh vegetables I buy a weeks stock at one go......

I depends on the budget and food stocks that we have at home. I and my husband usually go shopping twice a month and we buy things that we need at home for the entire two weeks. We usually go shopping during weekends because that is his day off from work. I agree that buying in bulk can save you money and time. If you go to shopping every week then you have to pay for the taxi fare every week. But if you will go shopping every month or twice a month you an save money from the fare and also time.

me and my husband will go for shopping together and do shopping once in a week and he don;t like to shop weekly 2,3 times. he will get bored and tired for going shopping more times.

Hi. When all 3 of my children were home, I used to shop once a month. Now that I am single and on my own, I may shop once a week, or once every 2 weeks. But all that changes when the weather is like it is now in Chicago. When it hits below zero, if I haven't stock up, I do, and just try to wait it out.

I usually go to grocery store once a week or two. Its depend on the stocks in my freez. Yes, buying in bulk can save, but that also depend on the type of the product. Buying in bulk is better for product that have longer expiration date, or if you have many family members that required a lot.

i am a couponer and a bulk buyer. We usually shop every Sunday I sit down make a list and organize my coupons We only hit one town we are very rural so this is necessary to travel. But The coupon clipping and list making takes about 30 minutes , This makes our shopping much faster as everything is in order. Our needs hit the top of the list , and our wants the bottom. I usually budget $100.00 for the gas and items each week. If I have really good deal coupons I donate the items that are free or almost to our local food pantry. I usually shop wise , giant , Bilo , Cvs , Rite aid , Kmart , Wegmans , and we have a local surplus store. It takes my hubby and I about 2 hours to do all the shopping one time per week. I have a great storage area and i put the new items behind items already on the shelf so I keep the fresh always in the back. And I have 2 big freezers since we have a farm anyway to store great items in. In the summer we only shop every other week since produce and eggs are here on the farm. Good luck happy saving make shopping fun if you have kids let them find the things you have coupons for.
