Rent or Condition--What's more important?

I'm looking for a new apartment and was just curious what you all thought is more important: the amount for rent or whether an apartment is well kept. I personally don't care too much about rent, as long as it is not overly expensive. I would prefer more expensive than a place full of cockcroaches or a neighborhood that isn't very safe.
